In the English version, at the beginning of "Campaign for Jianye" Guo Jia will mistakenly refer to Cai Wenji as Zhenji. Jia also orders Zhang He to attack from the south. He instead attacks the west with Zhang Liao and Dian Wei, and Guo Jia is the only one to assist in attacking south.
During development a new game engine was used instead of reusing the engine from the previous game. Producer Atsushi Miyauchi stated that they chose the new engine for its ability to render deferred lighting, which gave the game a more realistic look to match the more historically accurate story, though this also meant that the character models had to be remade from scratch.
The theme for the Battle of Chibi, "Capricious Wind", samples the musical themes for the kingdoms of Shu, Wei, and Wu. This seems to be a nod to the battle's importance in the history of all three kingdoms.
The leitmotif of each faction is a remix of a song from Dynasty Warriors 7; Shu's is a cover of "Large Feather", Wei's is a cover of "Frenzy Moon", Wu's is a cover of "Intense Collision", and Jin's is a cover of "Male Roar".
