During development of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo approached developer Ruby Party in 2016 about creating an otome game (a romance genre targeted towards women) for the system, as their lineup at the time consisted mostly of action games. However, the game's direction would later change to "portray a variety of bonds, not just romantic ones", which led to the creation of the adventure game Buddy Mission: Bond.
