Super Mario Bros. 3 marked a permanent shift in the color scheme of Mario's overalls and sweater. Between the box arts and sprites of previous games, Mario would often switch from wearing a blue sweater and red overalls, to wearing a red sweater and blue overalls. The latter outfit would become the unified standard appearance for Mario in all subsequent games starting with Super Mario Bros. 3.

Yet games between Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2 like of course the original Super Mario Bros. still have Mario wearing a blue shirt and red overalls. Could've sworn 1988 is when it started with the colour switch.

No, the Mario Bros. arcade game was the first game where he wore that.

Super Mario Bros. 2 is the first game to have Mario with a red shirt and blue overalls right? Despite what artwork shows.
