Attachment In 2012, Ken Balough announced that Big the Cat would be retired from the franchise for the time being as they could not find a good use for the character, and all things that they already tried didn't work out for him. This however did not stop Big from making cameo appearances in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, having a trophy in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. 4, having a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, being playable in the mobile games Sonic Runners and Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, and even making a full appearance in Lego Dimensions and Team Sonic Racing. Big was eventually reintroduced to the mainline Sonic games in Sonic Frontiers.

Inside the 3DS version's files are unused announcer clips for "Boss Battle," "Tourney," "Events," "Coin Battle," "Master/Crazy Orders," "Smash Tour," and "8-Player Smash," suggesting they may have been available for both versions. All of them except for Boss Battle would later be used for the Wii U version.

As for the 8-Player Smash, there is an announcer clip for "Yellow Team." However, because 8-Player Smash was cut for the 3DS version, so did the Yellow Team.

"Special Smash" can be heard in the Sound Test as voice clip 83 for the Announcer in the 3DS version.

There is an unused Announcer clip saying "Smash World," which may have been an early name for Smash Tour. Similarly, the Japanese name for Smash Tour is "World Smash."

Despite speculation to the contrary, Sawada is unarmed in the game. The "katana" shown was intended at the time to be a "motion blur"; given a conflict between the two Capcom branches, however, flicker transparency was not applied and it was instead left solid. His slashing attacks were intended to have an ethereal appearance to them, akin to the Hadoken. The designers argued for the flicker effect but were instead denied, and as a result opted for a look based on Mortal Kombat's effects at the time.
