The name "Mappy" is likely derived from the early 20th century Japanese slang term "マッポ" (mappo), used in criminal circles to refer to a police officer.
“まっぽ”, in 日本国語大辞典 (Nihon Kokugo Daijiten, “Nihon Kokugo Daijiten”) (in Japanese), 2nd edition, Tōkyō: Shogakukan, 2000, ISBN: 4-09-521001-X

The characters of Mappy and Goro/Nyamco predate the Mappy game by 2 and 3 years respectively, originally being designed as robots for Micromouse maze competitions. Unlike the similar situation with Pac-Man banks, these robots were made by Namco, making Mappy fully verifiable as both an official and intentional adaptation.
