During a livestream of Undertale conducted by Fangamer for the title's tenth anniversary in 2025, developer Toby Fox revealed that he had planned to have six different Royal Guard characters, which was truncated to two (RG 01 and RG 02) in the final game. A remnant of this is present in the game's files, which contain mostly coded RG 03 and RG 04 enemies. Fox additionally revealed that at one point, he devised a scenario where if one Royal Guard was killed, the other would inhale his dust and have a panic attack. The idea was scrapped due to negative feedback it received from a friend of Fox's, which he ultimately agreed with and dismissed the idea in hindsight as "too edgy."
