Spooky's House of Jump Scares was renamed to Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion in 2016, almost a year after its initial release on Steam. According to programmer Sheena Perez, she and co-developer Akuma Kira received a cease and desist order from the German mobile game developer Spooky House Studios around July 2015 demanding that they change the name of the game, as they owned the trademark for "Spooky House" in the European Union. The developers hired a lawyer to explore their options, but as Perez explained, "being a staff of two who released a free game, we didn't really have the means to deal with an international legal battle." The two parties agreed to a confidential settlement and new builds of the game were distributed with the new name, with the game's logo now resembling a sign that had been hastily remade to fit the new title.
