SCUD Race was at one point planned to be released for the Dreamcast. According to the magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly, it was one of several launch titles planned for Dural, the code name for what would eventually become the Dreamcast. It was later revealed that a port of the game was made as a tech demo for the system and shown to developers in 1997 or 1998, but Sega decided against releasing it, feeling that the game would not be cutting edge by the time of the Dreamcast's eventual launch. Although the game never received a direct console port, the 2004 port of OutRun 2 for the Xbox included the race tracks from SCUD Race as extra content.

Attachment SCUD Race had its name changed to Super GT for release in the United States due to concerns from Sega of America that the acronym "SCUD" (Sport Car Ultimate Drive) would be associated with the Scud missiles used by Iraq in the then-recent Gulf War.
