To celebrate NASCAR's 50th anniversary, the PlayStation version of NASCAR 98 was re-released as a collector's edition in 1998. The front cover of the collector's edition featured a black and white picture of one of Richard Petty's third generation Dodge Chargers racing against modern cars of the time. Petty appears in this version of the game as a racer replacing Geoff Bodine, and the fictional Belmont International Raceway is replaced by Darlington Raceway, a speedway that has been used by NASCAR since 1950. The game's opening cutscene, title screen, and menu selection screens were also changed to more prominently feature Petty and his cars.
