Takao Sakai, the game's art director, explained that the game's art style was inspired by the Silver Age of comic books, particularly the works of Jack Kirby, Bruce Timm, and Mike Mignola. Similarly, the designs of the enemy aliens were inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
