Prior to the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the design of the Chaos Emeralds was inconsistent between each game, switching between color, shape and gemstone cut, and amount. From Sonic the Hedgehog 3 onwards, they would be finalized to be seven emeralds with the appearance of a brilliant cut diamond; due to the cut used, this would technically make them "Chaos Diamonds".
