The Sega Mega Drive was first announced in June 1988 as the Mark V, continuing the naming scheme that started with the Mark III, the third iteration of the SG-1000. The internal model number of the console was the MK-1601. Neither name ended up being used at retail, as Sega wanted a "stronger" name. Over 300 proposals were considered for the console's final name before settling on the Mega Drive.
