According to director Patrick Wyatt, the game's art style was inspired by the fantasy tabletop game franchise Warhammer. Additionally, Blizzard's co-founder Allen Adham hoped to turn the game into a video game adaptation of Warhammer, but because of "a lack of traction on business terms" and the development team's desire to control their own setting, a deal could not be made.

And on a semi related note: no, StarCraft did not start out as a Warhammer 40k game and was never intended to be one. That's just a rumor, a rumor likely inspired by this trivia.
