The game was originally advertised as being a prequel to the other Spyro games, though upon release, was confirmed to be a reboot of the series.

Originally, there was to be a mini quest for Spyro to retrieve Ignitus' battle armor from the "Ape Wars" shortly after meeting him. Neither the background story nor the quest made it in the final game, although the models were used as decoration throughout the swamp.
