Not at all. This is not the most accurate retelling of it, but online multiplayer is old PC gaming tech dating back to the early 70s with text dungeon games and later MMORPGs. For game consoles, it stayed confined to add-on modems that didn't perform well until the mid 90s. The Apple Pippin was technically the first game console to have a built-in modem, but it had very limited multiplayer capability and was a flop. Sega put a better modem into the Dreamcast and invested a lot more into its online features as PC gaming was getting more popular, the competition followed suit and the rest is history.

Thought online multiplayer wasn't a thing until 7th gen systems.
