Mario was considered early in development for a role as a playable character in the Wii version of the game, however, the developers wanted to avoid cross contamination with the Mario & Sonic series.

Even though Sega has had no problem with Sonic being in every Smash Bros. game since Brawl as a non-Nintendo character, Nintendo has not been able to allow Mario to appear in any Sega All Stars games as a non-Sega character, all because of the crossovers between the 2 series at the Olympics.
