Tommy Tallarico is a video game composer and the president of Intellivision Entertainment. In 2019, he discovered that the popular "oof" default death sound effect used in Roblox since 2006 was extremely similar to a sound effect he claimed to have created for the 2000 PC game Messiah.

Roblox's developers claimed that the game's creators David Baszucki and Erik Cassel pulled the sound from a CD-ROM they had purchased containing licensed, copyright-free sound effects. Further research into the metadata of the audio file from pre-2013 clients shows the "oof" sound effect, officially called "Died", was created on September 18, 1998 in Sound Forge 4.5, with Messiah being the earliest known use of the sound effect.

Tallarico initially filed a copyright claim against Roblox and requests to him by the game's developers to present proof he owned the original sound effect produced nothing. However, after a year of negotiations with the developers, they worked out a compromise that involved them creating a new default death sound effect, and moving the "oof" sound effect behind a 100 Robux ($1) paywall after the implementation of the game's Developer Marketplace began. Since the dispute was settled, Tallarico released an official sound design kit for Roblox's Developer Marketplace with pricing ranging from $10 to $250 based on how many sounds are purchased.

"Five Nights at Freddy's: Survival Crew" was an upcoming Roblox game made in direct collaboration with Scott Cawthon, himself a fan of Roblox and playing it regularly with his children. However, due to miscommunication between Scott and the game's developer, Metaverse Team Frights, regarding one of the game's skins, a beta version of the game was accidentally released on December 20, 2023. The game was set to private two hours afterwards, and no news on the game has been released since.

One of the most criticized social groups to spawn from the game is its unauthorized online dating community, where players attempt to court real-life romantic relationships and imitate sexual scenarios on what is intended to be a family-friendly online game. Due to oversights, corporate corruption, and neglected enforcement of the game's age verification system, many predatory meetings and interactions between adults and underaged children or teenagers have occurred through Roblox both in and outside this community (including an incident involving a popular sub-game developer who was wanted by the FBI in the United States). These incidents have received increased news coverage since the 2010s, and have resulted in state and federal lawsuits in the US targeting the game's ineffective enforcement of its child safety policies. While dating as a whole is currently forbidden in the game's Community Standards, Roblox CEO David Baszucki expressed public interest in having officially-supported dating games and chatrooms for verified adult users later down the line (something he also admitted to being reprimanded by the game's safety team for) as part of a general initiative to retain its original aging playerbase. Chief product officer Manuel Bronstein described it as a need to "age up, [and] grow internationally". Roblox's official TikTok account also promoted this by posting fictionalized meet-up videos and posting comments supporting innocent adult-to-adult interactions.
