Mr. Dark, the main antagonist of the first Rayman game, was originally planned to return in Rayman Origins. Like many characters from the first game, he was intended to receive a redesign, specifically being changed into a Teensie. However, he was ultimately scrapped from the game, with his planned redesign being used for another character originating from the first game, the Magician (who also took Mr. Dark's place as the main antagonist). Despite this, Mr. Dark was made available as an avatar on the PlayStation Store.

Despite this removal, Mr. Dark is referenced during the level "The Reveal", where the player discovers the Magician's true status as the villain. Upon being discovered, he rips the golden star off his hat, showing a more clear resemblance to Mr. Dark. Additionally, several posters are seen on the walls of the Magician's lair, with one even having "♥ Mister D" written on it, suggesting that the Magician admires Mr. Dark.
