The game's core mechanic, tracking the player's sleep habits, was extremely difficult to implement because the developers at Select Button could only test the feature once per day, when people were naturally asleep. This, as well as localization issues and the burden of making the game compatible with Pokémon Go Plus+, delayed the game's release to 2023, four years after it began development in 2019.
