Fire Emblem Shadows is the first game in the series to depict its lead protagonist as being in a pre-established same-sex relationship. In the chapter "A Royal Secret", it's revealed that Prince Kurt is Spoiler:actually a woman disguising herself as a man to prevent a power struggle, because the rules of royal succession in the Kingdom of Ast only allow male heirs to ascend to the throne, and she is the King's only child. At the end of the chapter, it's revealed that Kurt's fiancée Princess Rose is fully aware of Spoiler:Kurt's true sex, but that it has no impact on their love for each other.
