The Sega Genesis' YM2612 sound chip is directly based on the Yamaha DX7, an FM digital synthesizer introduced in 1983 which became ubiquitous throughout popular music of the 1980s. These shared elements motivated composer Tom Holkenborg to use his own collection of vintage Yamaha FM synthesizers when writing the soundtrack for the 2020 film Sonic the Hedgehog. According to him, he aimed to translate the "noisy and harsh" sound of the 1991 game into certain parts of the film score with these synthesizers, while complementing more emotional scenes with orchestral pieces.
