Grim Fandango was the first LucasArts adventure game that did not use the SCUMM engine. It ran on the GrimE engine, which was scripted in Lua.

The original title for the game was Deeds of the Dead. The name was changed to reference a poem recited in the game when the marketing department didn't want to publish a game with the word "dead" in its title.
