According to co-director Phil Crabtree, the team aimed to avoid common pitfalls of the investigation genre. Specifically, their two core principles for the game were "never trick the player and always let them do whatever they want to do, whenever they want to do it". He noted that it was hard for them to stick to these principles due to various problems they created, but felt that they were still essential to the game's identity, stating:
"When you do choose to go to trial, it's because you've chosen it. And the outcome, whether you like it or not, you can see the correlation. We haven't hidden something from you. It's something you haven't found. And it's so important just to let it feel like they have been listened to in the game and their choices."
