The game was originally announced with a playable demo at E3 2002 under the name "Donkey Kong Plus" with different 2D pixel graphics from the final game, as well as a level editor that could be accessed through link functionality with the Nintendo GameCube. Both of these features were scrapped, but remnants of the level editor can be found in the data of the final game and accessed using a cheat device.
