The line "DON'T LOOK INTO THE DEATH STAR, OR YOU WILL DIE." is a reference to the manga Hokuto no Ken. In the manga, if two warriors engaged in a fight see the Star of Death, one of them will die soon. This reference was lost in the English translation, as Hokuto no Ken was not popular in America.

To be more specific, in Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star, a person who sees the Star of Death on their own is fated to die within the year (except Mamiya, who ends up no longer able to see it and no longer doomed when Rei dies for her sake). When two great warriors engage in battle, both see the Star, but its unclear who will die in that circumstance.
