Originally, the game was planned to be titled "Bequest", but another game with the same name and a similar point-and-click mechanic was released on Steam during development. Director Tonda Ros decided to change the name to Blue Prince due to its double entendre: the title is both a pun on the word "blueprints" and a nod to a common theme found within the game's puzzles.
