There have been two canceled games in the Sam & Max series:

• The first was a pitch for an action-adventure game developed by Infinite Machine for the Xbox called Sam & Max Plunge Through Space. It would have been based on a story developed by series creator Steve Purcell soon after the release of Sam & Max Hit the Road, and focused more on the adventure aspect of the genre, but the pitch did not make it into development.
• The second game was another sequel to Hit the Road developed by LucasArts called Sam & Max: Freelance Police. Itwas planned to be an episodic game and made it far into production (to the point it was even rated by the ESRB) before being canceled due to "current market place realities and underlying economic considerations." After Freelance Police was canceled, LucasArts' license for the Sam & Max IP expired, and many of the employees left LucasArts to form Telltale Games. Purcell then licensed out the IP to Telltale so they could make their own episodic Sam & Max games.
