The Atari 2600 game Star Fox was intended by development company Mythicon to be the first entry in a series. Star Fox II was planned to be a two-part game, with space shooter portions using a 3D perspective, and portions where you could land on planets and go "rogue-ing and looting" in mazes. According to developer Bruce de Graaf, it was conceived that the Star Fox II cartridge containing the space shooter portions could connect to another cartridge with the maze gameplay called Loot, in a fashion similar to the eventual release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles a decade later. Both games were cancelled early into development.
