Composer James Therrien had two primary motivations when he offered to write the soundtrack to Rain World in 2012. The first was a strong feeling he had when he first discovered the game in development that the soundtrack should have a "naturalistic, organic approach", as opposed to arcade-inspired music commonly found in indie games. The second was a nightmare he had where the game released and was "filled with garbage music", making him fear that poor audio could ruin the game.
