The game was originally conceived as an MMORPG, when it was under the development of 38 Studios, codenamed Copernicus. The studio decided to retool an existing single-player RPG to be set within the same universe in order to introduce the Amalur MMORPG. The idea was later scrapped after 38 Studios and Big Huge Games were shut down.
