Three months after the game's release, the Association for American Indian Development launched a website to organize a boycott, arguing that the game presented Native Americans through offensive, damaging, and historically misleading stereotypes. The organization argued that the reception to the game's portrayal of Native Americans was hypocritical when violence towards other racial or ethnic communities were more likely to be condemned. They also argued that while the game's later storyline introduced additional historical developments, these did not resolve the offensive material presented earlier in the game. The website included a petition urging Activision to make significant changes to the game before distributing it to stores again, or else the group would seek a worldwide recall. In response, Activision released a statement apologizing for the game's content:

"Activision does not condone or advocate any of the atrocities that occurred in the American West during the 1800s. Gun was designed to reflect the harshness of life on the American frontier at that time. It was not Activision's intention to offend any race or ethnic group with Gun, and we apologize to any who might have been offended by the game's depiction of historical events which have been conveyed not only through video games but through films, television programming, books and other media."
