Driver was inspired by the 1978 crime thriller film "The Driver", which was the first ever film that series creator Martin Edmonson saw in a cinema as a child. He was also inspired by his childhood experiences attending destruction derbies and banger races, and was fascinated by how mangled up the cars were afterwards.
