According to former series director Jin Fujisawa, series creator Yuji Horii told him that "Dragon Quest isn't about the scenario", as Fujisawa had believed the scenario was everything for an RPG when he was younger. By comparison, Horii believed that the experience that players went through was more important. One such example given was in regards to Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, which gave players the ability to choose who they would marry. Fujisawa initially rejected this philosophy, but eventually came to not only understand it, but even incorporated it into his own work.

Longtime Nintendo Power writer Alan Averill used a photo of a Slime from the Dragon Quest series as his staff portrait, due to him being too camera-shy to print a photo of himself in the magazine.

The name 'Dragon Quest' was trademarked by Simulations Publications, who used the name for their Pen and Paper RPG. Because of this, the name of the series was changed to 'Dragon Warrior' in North America until the release of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed.
