In an effort to allow people to play the game who couldn't afford it, the game's developers decided to upload a free version of Darkwood onto the website The Pirate Bay to torrent. Instead of offering free Steam keys, they hoped that doing this would also stop key reselling sites from selling the game, and also hoped for gamers to eventually purchase the game once it was discounted on Steam.
