In 2006, 55% of Atlus' assets were acquired by Index Corporation and fully absorbed in 2010. From then on, Atlus' Japanese branch technically ceased to exist as a company, instead being used as a brand name for Index Corporation. This changed on June 12, 2013, when the headquarters of Index Corporation was raided by officials from the Japanese Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission and found that the company was window dressing their numbers by round-tripping their assets. This caused their market value to plummet from $67.7 million dollars to only $10.8 million, and forced the company to file for bankruptcy on June 27, 2013, thus putting Atlus' remaining assets in jeopardy. Persona series director Katsura Hashino would release a statement the following month reassuring fans that the development of all unannounced titles at Atlus were unaffected by these proceedings. In September 2013, Sega made a bid for Atlus and was ultimately able to buy the company and let Atlus retain its creative freedom.
