Spanx from Whiplash was originally introduced two years earlier as a guest character in Mad Dash Racing, as both games were being developed at the same time by Crystal Dynamics. When Whiplash did release, Spanx sported a new design and was completely mute, though some traits from his appearance from Mad Dash Racing carried over, such as his jittery movements.

The Genron employee Roman Polański is a not-so-subtle reference to film director of the same name, even being dubbed as such by Redmond. Upon returning back to the Robotics section and defeating his upgraded form "Robo Polański", Redmond turns to Spanx and references a quote from Polański's 1974 film "Chinatown": "Forget it [Spanx], it's Chinatown."
