In 2012, the European trademark registration for the Medabots series expired, resulting in it being acquired by Kevin Comadrán de Frutos in 2018 in an attempt to develop his own series of Medabots games, at least one of which was planned as an NFT project. In 2020, Comadrán was granted a temporary restraining order that prevented the Medabots IP owner Imagineer from selling games on platforms such as Google Play and Apple Store in Europe, as well as Comadrán filing a trademark infringement case against Imagineer. This resulted in a three-year long legal battle between the two parties, but in 2023, the Spanish Commercial Courts of Alicante ruled in favor of Imagineer, claiming that Comadrán's use of the Medabots name infringed on Imagineer's intellectual property rights. Comadrán appealed the ruling, but the Spanish Supreme Court dismissed it in 2025, effectively ending the legal battle.
