Genius Sonority was founded in 2002 by Dragon Quest series veteran Manabu Yamana. His previous company Heartbeat collapsed owing to the difficult development of Dragon Warrior VII and the PlayStation remake of Dragon Warrior IV. The name "Genius Sonority" was meant to refer to "resonating talent" and the company was founded with financial backing from former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi and staffing from Creatures Inc. Despite their prior experience, Genius Sonority primarily focused on the Pokémon series and has developed only one Dragon Quest game to date: Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company were both majority shareholders as of 2013.
