Liyla and The Shadows of War was originally rejected for iOS devices because Apple didn't think the app's strong political themes would be appropriate in the "Games" category. Apple then suggested that developer Rasheed Abueideh re-categorize the game as a "News" or "Reference" app. Apple rescinded this decision a week later after a public outcry, and the game is now available on iOS devices under the "Games" category.

The games' most prominent subplot focuses on the conflict between Team Aqua and Team Magma in their efforts to gain control of the legendary Pokémon Kyogre and Groudon to change the climate in response to the effect of humans on the environment in order to create expanded environments for sea and land Pokémon respectively. Although it has not been confirmed by the developers, this subplot may have drawn direct inspiration from a real-life controversy that was a prominent issue in Japan at the time of the games' development and continues to be. The Isahaya Bay land reclamation project on the Japanese island of Kyūshū, which the Hoenn region is based on, aimed to expand the available farmland in one of Japan's last wetland habitats. This lead to fierce political conflict from environmentalists who argued that the project would cause long-term damage to the wetlands and the marine ecosystem of the area through agricultural runoff released into the sea, and from reclamation activists who argued that Kyūshū needed the land as Japan has very little arable land already and needs to produce enough food to feed its increasing population and keep up with rapid industrialization. The concept of Team Aqua and Team Magma draw striking parallels to each side of this issue (i.e. reclaiming land where there used to be sea and protesting to reclaim sea where there is now land) while being written as cultic villains akin to Team Rocket from past games without distinct arguments to their positions. This causes these parallels to be obscured and emphasizes the personal gain of expanding, or reducing land for the sake of certain land, or sea Pokémon to be won out from the conflict with little to no regard for humanity.
In Pokémon Emerald, the unified story featuring Kyogre and Groudon both being pacified by the presence of Rayquaza, a Pokémon heralding from the sky which in many religions and mythologies is where powerful gods and deities live, hints that a divine compromise between civilization and nature is the necessary solution, with how Hoenn is presented in the final game through the coexistence of different environments, humans and Pokémon being the result. This suggests that the preservation of Isahaya Bay while allowing for land reclamation elsewhere is the compromise this subplot is trying to get across.

Scott Cawthon retired from game development in 2021 after it was discovered that he had donated thousands of dollars to anti-LGBTQ+ Republican political candidates. Cawthon posted a message to his fans on his website stating:
He also stated that he would be choosing someone that he trusts to take over the FNaF franchise. Cawthon later removed this message from his website, has not announced a successor for the franchise, and appears to still have complete control over it. In 2023, Cawthon released the first game since announcing his retirement, Freddy in Space 3: Chica in Space, as a supposed tie-in to the "Five Nights at Freddy's" movie from that year.
"I've had a blessed, fulfilling, and rich career. I've been shown great kindness and I've tried to show great kindness in return. I've tried to make some good games (let the debate ensue), and I've witnessed the creation of possibly the most creative and talented fanbase on the planet. [...] I realize that I miss a lot of things that I got to focus on before FNaF became such a success. I miss making games for my kids, I miss doing it just for fun, and I miss making RPGs even though I stink at it. All of this to say that I am retiring."

In 1993, Alfred Chicken publisher Mindscape attempted a publicity stunt by having Alfred Chicken run for a seat in the UK Parliament in the 1993 Christchurch, Dorset by-election, having an actor in an Alfred Chicken costume appear at the British House of Commons constituency of Christchurch as votes were read out. The Alfred Chicken Party ranked at second last with 18 votes, exceeding the Rainbow Alliance (a party intent on abolishing Parliament) by 2 votes. The Alfred Chicken Party was cited - alongside the "Buy The Daily Sport Party" - years later by the Liberal Democrats as a reason for increasing the number of signatures required for a party to get on a ballot.

The arcade version of Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA2 was planned for release in Europe, under the name "Dancing Stage SuperNOVA2". However, due to Sony's refusal to import the original Japanese PlayStation 2 into European territories (primarily to hinder third-party companies from modifying them to play unauthorized imported games from other regions), all releases and cabinet upgrades were cancelled. The reason why this import ban affected an arcade game like DDR SuperNOVA2 is because BEMANI Python 2, the hardware SuperNOVA2 ran on, was simply a retail PlayStation 2 with added I/O boards. While Europe did receive a PlayStation 2 Dancing Stage title under the Dancing Stage SuperNOVA2 name, it was nothing more than a stripped-down version of the North American PlayStation 2 SuperNOVA2 CS game, with one new license and most of the North American licenses removed.

Shortly after the game's release, some of the game's fans began speculating on the political leanings of the human characters, who the goose antagonizes. As many of the game's fans were left-of-center, the most common theory posited that the humans were all conservatives who voted in favor of the United Kingdom's departure from the European Union. After a Twitter user sent a tweet to the game's developer House House asking if this was the case, they denied the theory, instead stating that the game took place in an alternate timeline where Britain underwent a Marxist revolution after conservative and Euroskeptic prime minister Margaret Thatcher was chased out of office by a goose, causing the Conservative Party's "irreparable decline".
In a 2019 interview with Vulture, developers Jacob Strasser and Michael McMaster stated that this story was "a joke canonical version of the world of the game," noting that many fans responded to the explanation by expressing sympathy with the human cast. The pair additionally described the goose as "chaotic neutral" (an alignment from the Dungeons & Dragons franchise) and expressed flattered amusement with fans' political interpretations of the title, stating that "Anything the left can take joy in and pride in and have a bit of fun with, we love. And if it pisses off some alt-right people, then great."

On May 9, 2022, some Wordle players were given the answer "Fetus", while others were given "Shine". Fetus had been put on the game's schedule a year before the answer showed up, but was replaced later following the United States Supreme Court overturning of Roe V. Wade, a legal ruling that protected abortion rights. However, come the day when Shine was intended to be answer, the game's amateur coding from before it was bought out by newspaper outlet The New York Times made it difficult to ensure Fetus didn't show up whatsoever.

In Axie Infinity, a play-to-earn NFT game revolving around breeding, training, and selling axolotl-like creatures called Axies for real money, more experienced players will rent out their Axies to less experienced players in exchange for a portion of the less experienced player's later profits. This feature contains heavy similarities to sharecropping, a real-life practice often described by its use in the United States from the Reconstruction era into the mid-20th century as a post-abolition equivalent to slavery. Due to many of the low level players taking loans coming from low-income countries such as the Philippines and Brazil, Axie Infinity has been described by some analysts as "digital colonialism".

When PETA released Cooking Mama Kills Animals, a satirical flash game parodying the Cooking Mama franchise, Mama series publisher Majesco responded with a press release condemning the game and stating that Mama, while not a vegetarian, supports humane treatment of animals:
"Mama wants people to know that World Kitchen includes 51 recipes from around the world, ranging from vegetarian fare like miso soup and rice cakes to international delicacies like ginger pork and octopus dumplings. "I would never put rat in my Ratatouille," said a feisty Mama while beating some eggs. "Like any accomplished cook, I create my recipes to appeal to a broad range of tastes and preferences. My only goal is to ensure you leave the table well fed." Cooking Mama World Kitchen includes more than 25 vegetarian-friendly recipes including delicious breakfast, dinner, dessert and snack options. And, while Mama is not a vegetarian, she fully supports the humane treatment of animals, particularly for her canine protege Max who makes his doggie debut in World Kitchen."

The choice to portray real-life political figures, specifically the union leader Arthur Scargill and prime minister Margaret Thatcher, as villains in Wanted! Monty Mole was a PR stunt and successful attempt to rile the news media, and not an attempt to push any one political ideology. Bio Force Ape is a game that was never released - it did, before it's cancellation, get a spotlight in Nintendo Power, creating a level of curiosity surrounding it within NES fan communities. Capitalizing off of this curiosity, a post would be made on the Digital Press forum in 2005 claiming to show screenshots of a leaked prototype. While the first post appeared legitimate, the hoax would eventually be unraveled starting with a screenshot of a glitched super move that was "so powerful [that] it messes up the game's graphics", which humorously made it appear that Bio Force Ape was unleashing a powerful fart attack, as a set of glitched graphics appeared next to a crouching animation. The poster, going under the username PaulB812, would refuse to dump the game and refer to anybody who asked for it to be released as either "communists" or "butter-slathered... hoarding fatties", before finally unveiling the prank with a game screenshot of a cutscene where a fat butter monster points out that the ape is "worth 2K monies[sic]", before the ape punches him while saying "EAT COMMUNISM!" A real prototype would be leaked in 2010.

In 2019, amid a rise in popularity for anti-vaccine conspiracy theories and psuedoscience, a petition was started for Plague Inc. to implement anti-vaccine advocates, or "anti-vaxxers", as a situation that would buff your disease. Ndemic Creations, while noting that anti-vaxxers do technically exist as a smaller part of the "Science Denial" scenario along with flat Earth theorists and climate change deniers, agreed to include the movement as a solo buff for the disease, but did not have an idea for how they would work in gameplay at the time. Anti-vaxxers have not yet been added to the game, but a second buff partially referencing anti-vaxxers, "Fake News", would be added.

The Chinese Version of Fate/Grand Order, published by video sharing website bilibili, features several changes and censored elements compared to the original Japanese release. These were all likely done as to comply with Chinese law. Some examples of changes are as follows:
• Boudica: Attire altered to reduce cleavage and panties were changed into shorts. She and Mata Hari also temporarily had their portrait artwork removed before being put back in place
• Shuten-Doji: Ascensions were altered to reduce visible skin throughout.
• Mata Hari: Bikini top was made larger to reduce cleavage. She and Boudica also temporarily had their portrait artwork removed before being put back in place
• Cú Chulainn: Second Ascension was altered to cover his chest.
• Minamoto-no-Raikou: The cloth covering her breasts in her first ascension is retained in her second and third.
• Hassan of the Cursed Arm: Second Ascension adds a cloth obscuring his face and chest.
• Yu-Mei-Ren (Assassin): Name was temporarily changed to Assassin 230, then later 雏罂. Reduced the size of her cleavage window and added fabric to hide skin showing in her second and third ascensions. Her bust size is also notably smaller in the Chinese version.
• Yu-Mei-Ren (Lancer): Swimsuit was adjusted to be less revealing.
• Gorgon: Attire adjusted to cover chest more.
• Wu Zetian (Assassin): Name was temporarily changed to Assassin 170, then later 周照. All appearances of the character were scrubbed, as well as any mentions of her by name, replacing her with the default Assassin Card. Spoiler:This affects the story of Agartha as she is the true identity of Assassin of the Nightless City, one of the story's antagonist. Was later given fabric covering her stomach on her second, third, and final ascensions.
• Xuanzang Sanzang: Cleavage is covered. Artwork was temporarily disabled until adjusted artwork was provided. Was renamed "Pilgrim To The West" (西行者) to comply with Chinese depiction laws.
• Yang Guifei: Second ascension adds frills to her attire's lower body, while her third and final cover up her chest. She also had some of her ascensions disabled until new artwork was added.
• Orion (Artemis): Removed cleavage from first ascension artwork and icon.
• Carmilla (Assassin): Added clothing to areas otherwise not covered in the original version.
• Ushiwakamaru: Was given skintight clothing covering her torso. Coincidentally, this resembles her design in Melty Blood: Type Lumina, which was also censored in a similar fashion.
• Tamamo Cat: Reduced cleavage and bust size.
• Fergus Mac Róich: Added bandages covering his chest.
• Phantom of the Opera: Blood was removed from his second ascension's knives.
• Giles De Rais (Saber): Blood stain removed from his second ascension.
• Scáthach (Lancer): Skin Tight suit made less see through.
• Darius III: Body paint was removed and his expression was changed to be less angry.
In addtion, several other Chinese-originating Servants had their names changed to their Class, followed by their Servant ID. Other Servants also had their names changed. Jack The Ripper, for example, was changed to "Abandoned Son of the Mist." Similar changes were also made to various Craft Essences, similarly removing revealing clothing and references to blood.
