Doubutsu no Mori
3
The source code for Doubutsu no Mori contains references to a variety of non-Nintendo Famicom ROMs that would not appear in the final game, including Arkanoid, F1 Circus, and most bizarrely, the bootleg port of Tekken 2 by Hummer Team.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
1
After Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door's announcement in 2003, some Mario fans incorrectly believed that the character of Madame Flurrie was going to be the ghost of Bowser's wife, based off of her character design and Japanese name. This is due to Flurrie's Japanese name, "Cloudia", sounding a lot like "Clawdia", a popular urban legend name for the Koopalings' mother supposedly created by the Mario fan website "Lemmy's Land", as well as Flurrie sharing a hair style with Ludwig and lip-shape with Wendy, who were at the time considered Bowser's children by Nintendo.
Pokémon Black Version

1
Attachment When Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2 first released in Japan, fake leaks were posted on various websites claiming to be ROMs of the game, but in reality contained an FMV of a parody of the theme song to the Disney Channel series Cory in the House. The parody featured several of the games' characters and other memes at the time superimposed over the actors' heads, including talk show host Stephen Colbert, a caricature of the Pokémon fan website Serebii.net with a Trollface superimposed over it, and legacy Pokémon character Gary Oak. Before the title card of the show appears at the end, a barely visible screenshot of a post from the imageboard 4chan can be seen featuring the box art of the Nintendo DS game adaptation of the show, implying that the parody and fake ROMs originated from there. The video also features several scrolling text statements including:

• "Amber killed Gary" - supposedly referring to an incident on 4chan's dedicated Pokémon board /vp/ starting on August 26, 2010 where several posters using Gary Oak and Mewtwo as avatars tried to "revive" or "kill" the anime-only character Amber from The Uncut Story of Mewtwo's Origin by trying to predict their post numbers in advance.
• "SHE IS BLACK ?!?" - referring to Pokémon Black & White Gym Leader Lenora.
• "GIANT HAIR EVERYWHERE" - on the following shot with four Bouffalants superimposed over Mount Rushmore.
• "FINAL GYM LEADER (IT HAS BEEN SEREBII CONFIRMED)" - referring to Iris, the last Gym Leader in Pokémon White and seems to be referring to leaks from the first Pokémon Black and Pokémon White games.
• "THIS FLOATING TEXT IS UP IN YO' SCREEN DAWG"
• "AMERICA" - on a shot of Stephen Colbert.

An upload of the fake ROM's FMV on YouTube dates back to September 16, 2010, two days before Pokemon Black & White's release date in Japan, and features several comments mentioning 4chan and /vp/ on top of the references in the video, suggesting that the hoax actually dates back to the release of the first Pokémon Black and Pokémon White, although discussion of this FMV from that time does not appear to have been preserved. While this ROM is also not known to be preserved (though its contents are), as recently as 2018 there have been reports of ROM dumps of Pokémon White 2 being silently modified to include Cory in the House references, including NPCs with dialogue featuring the lyrics to the show's theme song.

The Joy of Creation: Ignited Collection
subdirectory_arrow_right The Joy of Creation: Classic (Game)
1
When "THE JOY OF CREATION" was still in development as "The Joy of Creation: Ignited Collection", the first game in the The Joy of Creation series was going to be remade as part of the collection, where it would have been known as "The Joy of Creation: Classic". However, on July 27, 2023, Nikson revealed that he had changed his mind about adding Classic to the collection, instead having it only include The Joy of Creation: Reborn and The Joy of Creation: Story Mode.
Collection: Bubsy
2
Attachment When asked about Bubsy's height and weight for an episode of the Death Battle-esque YouTube series Limit Break featuring him fighting Gex, creator Michael Berlyn said that Bubsy is 3'6'' (42 inches) and 80 lbs, making his height closest to the length (or height if they were to be bipedal like Bubsy) of an Eastern or Mexican bobcat, but significantly heavier than any real-world species of bobcat.

Yo! Noid 2
1
One of the developers of Yo! Noid 2 also worked on STRAFE, a game featuring Totino's product placement. Through these food industry connections, said developer managed to contact Domino's Pizza and almost pitched the idea of having some kind of official collaboration. The developers ultimately did not go forward with, as the game's developers didn't feel they had enough energy to go through the hassle of making a pitch document. Despite the pitch not being made, the developers did compile a video of streamers talking about how the game made them hungry for Domino's for the purpose of the pitch.
Yo! Noid 2
1
Yo! Noid 2 was made for a game jam called New Jam City, hosted by the Vice Waypoint community. One of the rules of the game jam was that its name had to be derived from an episode of the Waypoint Radio podcast, with "Yo! Noid was Ahead of Its Time" being chosen for the game, and the Noid himself being used as the protagonist. The name itself is not actually used in-game, but is used on its Itch.io page. The inclusion of dabbing in this game was in reference to this, with the joke being that the Noid would be so "ahead of his time" that he would dab in a late-1990s video game.
Sonic X Shadow Generations
1
Sonic X Shadow Generations' title was leaked a day prior to its reveal by notable leakers and a URL registration. Following the leaks, some fans and gaming news websites jokingly noted that the term "Sonic X Shadow" had previously also been used on the internet since the 2000s to refer to fan art, fan-fiction and slash fiction depicting the hedgehogs as a romantic couple.
Postal III
1
On January 29, 2024, the Steam version of Postal III received a large content update adding various features and improvements originally made by the developers of the Zoom Platform version of the game as well as fixes and content by the series' fan community. The update notably included streamlined mod support, a high quality release of the official soundtrack, several bug and graphical fixes pointed out and contributed by players, updated versions of the game's official German and Japanese localizations, three new localizations in Portuguese/Brazilian, French and Polish translated by fans, and worldwide access to the previously Russian-only Fart Gun DLC.
Holocure: Save the Fans!

The "X-Potato" weapon is a reference to one of Inugami Korone's livestreams of Blasphemous, in which she accidentally mispronounces the name Exposito while looking up boss names up after beating the game. It is unlocked by surviving 10 minutes while playing as Korone in a run. Its available Collabs (fusions between two weapons) are also references to Korone:

• Rap Dog (combined with Idol Song): Alludes to Korone's ability to rap, most prominently shown off when she and Nekomata Okayu sang "if..." by DA PUMP.
• MiKorone (combined with Elite Lava Bucket): A portmanteau of Inugami Korone and Sakura Miko's names, a term for streams featuring the two collaborating together.
• I'm Die, Thank You Forever (combined with Holo Bomb): References a collaboration between her and Mori Calliope played Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes, each using their non-native language (English for Korone and Japanese for Calliope). During one attempt, Korone, realizing she couldn't diffuse the bomb in time, uttered "Ah, I'm die, thank you forever" before exploding.

Super Mario World
1
Attachment Despite Yoshi being considered impossible to implement into an NES game by Nintendo engineers, Hummer Team's bootleg backport of Super Mario World managed to include a fully functional Yoshi, capable of eating with his tongue, coexisting with Mario's power-ups, and running off when hit.
League of Legends
1
Attachment The skin Dark Star Cho'Gath was made in collaboration with a critically ill League of Legends player named Bryan, who met Riot Games through a partnership with the non-profit charity the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Bryan wished to "meet the creators of Riot Games, and make a skin with them." Dark Star Cho'Gath was chosen between three skin designs and inspired by Bryan's love of outer space. The skin's theme music is based on a clarinet performance from Bryan. All profits collected from the skin until July 20, 2018 were donated to various non-profit organizations around the world.

Pikmin 4
2
Attachment During the pre-release to Pikmin 4, many fans of the franchise were upset that the game did not recieve a larger marketing push from Nintendo, given its spotty sales history. In response, a large swathe of Pikmin fans took to the PixelStar service (which allows individuals to cheaply buy temporary advertising space that would usually be reserved for wealthy corporations in Times Square in New York City) to display Pikmin memes and fan art as a form of unsanctioned advertising. The total amount of money spent by Pikmin fans was estimated by MeriStation USA to be $300 minimum.

Pikmin 4 would end up becoming the best selling installment of the Pikmin franchise. This result most likely has much more to do with the popularity of the Nintendo Switch relative to the GameCube and Wii U, but given how major an advertising space like Times Square is, it isn't completely impossible that the PixelStar advertising could have contributed to the game's sales.
Super Danganronpa Another 2 ~The Moon of Hope and Sun of Despair~
1
During Chapter 1's development, LINUJ debated between having either Spoiler:Shobai or Yuri be the first victim. For this, he had two ideas as to where the story would go: one was the story that was ultimately written, where Spoiler:Yuri is the victim, and the other (where Spoiler:Shobai is the victim) would have it so that Spoiler:only his avatar dies, and he would reappear in the real world during the last chapter. LINUJ compared the latter idea to a "dark side that pretends to leave and then reappears later," using Spoiler:Mukuro's death and reappearance in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc as an example. The idea was ultimately scrapped for a variety of reasons, namely due to personality changes between the two and the fact that Spoiler:Shobai needed to be alive in order to solve the Chapter 3 trial.
Shipwrecked 64
1
The concept for Shipwrecked 64 first came about in 2016, when creator Squeaks D'Corgeh was making fangames based on Five Nights at Treasure Island, a Five Nights at Freddy's fangame featuring Disney characters. In 2020, he scrapped the Disney characters and replaced them with original characters, those being Bucky Beaver and his friends. He dropped the project for some time, but was reminded of it again after discovering a satirical Super Mario 64 Iceberg Tiers meme. The deepest fact below the iceberg, asserting that "every copy of Mario 64 is personalized", inspired the gameplay loop for Shipwrecked 64. He would restart development in 2021, which would ultimately lead to the version of the game released on Steam.

Super Danganronpa Another 2 ~The Moon of Hope and Sun of Despair~
1
Attachment Yoruko Kabuya's development began sometime during Danganronpa Another's development, specifically during the creation of Chapter 6.5. Originally, her name was "Yoruno Shibuki", and her talent was "Super High School Level Cabaret Girl". However, this talent was considered too obscure at the time, and so it was later changed. Additionally, her personality was described as being more "mundane and devilish" compared to her personality in the final game.

Her design did not go through many changes during development: the initial design had her hair down instead of up, and featured two additional bows on her outfit. For the prototype design, the design of her necklace was changed, the bows were removed, she gained (and later lost) an earring, her name and personality were changed, and her hair was tied up.
Halo 2600
