Attachment Thrash the Tasmanian Devil, a character introduced in Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comics, is based on a purple sprite that is created for several milliseconds on the game's title screen if the player quickly switches between Sonic and Knuckles' sprites. Notably, Ian Flynn stated in the graphic novel "Sonic Universe 3: Knuckles Returns" that Thrash was meant to be another rogue of Knuckles who could "throw down with Knuckles and have it mean something", which did not line up with his role in his debut during "Sonic Universe" Issue #11. However, this would later be conveyed during the "Endangered Species" story arc of the main comic, where it's revealed that he has a strong hatred towards the Echidna species due to their actions against his ancestors. When asked about the possibility of bringing Thrash back in the comic's reboot, Ian Flynn said he would love to bring him back, but "it comes with all that baggage... We can't really bring him back without people going 'Oh boy! And here we go!'"

Radiant Silvergun
3
According to developer Hiroshi Iuchi, the reason that Radiant Silvergun features no power-ups is because he thought items in shoot ‘em up games like Thunder Force or Gradius could often result in cheap deaths, and he wished to streamline how players switched between their ship's guns in an effort to create a game that progressed through just shooting and dodging:

"There’s been many previous games where you swap weapons, so adding a button just for switching weapons seemed too boring, and you always have to be keeping track of where your weapon gauge is. I wanted something where the way you used your hands was managed mentally. If the different weapons were all based on finger combinations, you wouldn’t need to visually confirm weapons, you’d just automatically know what you were using.

We also deliberately made the bullets slow. If you’re going for a gameplay style that involves threading through tiny cracks in bullet curtains, then a slower bullet speed will allow a wider audience to enjoy the pleasure of bullet dodging."

Attachment On March 17, 2019, in response to a post on the Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account celebrating St. Patrick's Day, YouTuber Jacksepticeye jokingly asked if he could voice "Irish the Hedgehog", to which the Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account responded:

"Absolutely.

(We just need to create him first.)"

A year later, they made good on this promise, releasing a video titled "Irish the Hedgehog" on the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube channel. According to Sega, the character was designed by artist Mark Hughes, and the video included a "folksy" remix of the song "Escape from the City" from Sonic Adventure 2 made by Hyper Potions and Jun Senoue.

A few years afterwards, Jacksepticeye would return to the Sonic franchise to voice another character: the appropriately-named Jack from the "Sonic Prime" episode "It Takes One to No Place".

Dead Space
3
During Chapter 3: Course Correction, after going through a brief Zero Gravity section on the way to the Engine Room, you have to proceed through a tunnel featuring blasting steam, flashing lights, and an extremely loud and dense noise lasting all throughout the room, referred to by some players as one of the scariest rooms in the game. According to series creator Glen Schofield in a 2019 Ars Technica interview, this sound originates from a recording of the trains in San Francisco's Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system.

For decades, BART trains were infamous for producing a "high-pitched squeal" during turns that stemmed from a conscious design choice when engineers started building it in the mid-1960s to make the train wheels solid axle - or connected - so that they rotated at the same rate. This made the trains relatively quiet on straightaways, which constitute a majority of BART's tracks, but because of the design, one of the wheels ended up getting dragged against the rail on turns, with this friction causing the noise.

During Dead Space's development when this was still an issue, audio director Don Veca recounted his experience riding a BART train to Schofield (the following quote paraphrased by him):

"'Glen, I was going in the BART train, we went under the Bay, and it's THE WORST SOUND IN THE HISTORY OF MAN!' or something like that, and I'm like 'RECORD IT!'"

The next day, Veca brought a microphone with him to record the noises. According to Schofield, the developers loved the resulting recordings, because it showed them a new way to use sound even more in the game's design by helping them realize how they could only use sound to scare people without relying on any enemies or other planned horror elements:

"-people are RUNNING in the room! They are just trying to get out of that room, it's so awesome!"

As for BART, they finally remedied the noise issues between October 2017 and February 2019, when they gradually replaced every train wheel in its fleet with new wheels designed to reduce the noise by as much as fifteen decibels, effectively making the riding experience "many times quieter than before".

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
3
In a 2013 interview with Polygon, director Bryce Holliday revealed that Luigi's portrayal in the game was influenced by the 1990 British comedy series Mr. Bean. The show served as reference material for Luigi's animations and characterization, with Holliday noting parallels between Luigi and the show's title character as a "hapless fool and reluctant hero." Holliday also felt that these similarities would help audiences sympathize with Luigi, which in turn would supplement the comic relief that his reactions and mishaps provide.

The console version of Phineas and Ferb: Across the Second Dimension has been noted to take heavy inspiration from the Ratchet & Clank series of games. This is because High Impact Games, the game's developer, was formed by former members of Insomniac Games, the creators of the Ratchet & Clank series.

Rise of the Robots
3
The UK children's gaming TV show Bad Influence did major marketing work for Rise of the Robots, devoting a large chunk of its Christmas special to the game and designing a new opening sequence based on Rise. Ironically, when the game launched, Bad Influence gave the game an extremely low score, much like most other gaming publications that were hyping up the game.

Attachment A cat can be found in the game who has a distinct fur pattern resembling the series emblem on his face. This was not just an Easter egg snuck in by developers, but was based on a real cat. According to a Reddit comment supposedly from the father of the person who caused this Easter egg to happen, the cat was named Master Chief and he belonged to a girl named Rebecca, the roommate of his daughter Alanna Sas. After the cat's passing, Sas commented on a Ubisoft or Assassin's Creed-related Facebook post asking the company to include the cat in the game in his memory, and if so she said she would reward the developers who included him with free coffee and Timbits from Tim Hortons. Upon players discovering the cat in the game, a moderator for the Assassin's Creed subreddit shared a screenshot of the Facebook comment revealing its origins.

Fate/Grand Order
3
The original plan for the game was a PvP, online MMO game known as Fate/Apocrypha. However, these plans were cancelled early in development. The project was later revived as "Fate Online Project Reboot" on the behest of publisher Aniplex wanting to make a mobile game to promote the Fate IP. According to head writer Kinoko Nasu, he never owned a smartphone prior to the development of Fate/Grand Order, but got one and played various free-to-play mobile games for reference. Fate/Apocrypha itself would later be revived as a Light Novel series.

Franchise: Mario
3
Attachment In the 2023 film "The Super Mario Bros. Movie", Mario and Luigi's family are prominently featured. This includes:

• Their Father, voiced by Charles Martinet (and bears a resemblance to Talon from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time)
• Their Mother, who previously appeared in "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!" and is voiced here by Jessica DiCicco
• Uncle Arthur, voiced by John DiMaggio
• Uncle Tony, voiced by Rino Romano (and was coincidentally mentioned in live-action segment "Glasnuts" from the TV series "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!")
• Aunt Marie, who's presumably married to Uncle Arthur
• An unnamed niece, who's most likely Marie and Arthur's daughter, being a first cousin once removed that's referred to as a "(second) niece"
• An unnamed grandfather, who's implied by the co-director Aaron Horvath to previously have been a boxer and wears an outfit similar to Luigi in the 1983 commercial for the Atari ports of Mario Bros.

Interestingly, all of the credited voice actors for the family are all of Italian descent to stay true to the family's Italian heritage.

According to Shigeru Miyamoto, the design of the family were based on character design sheets that former Nintendo illustrator Yoichi Kotabe drew decades before the film began production.

The idea of having a game told from the perspective of an immigrant mother came about because, as noted by lead developer Abhi, most media related to immigrant stories focused on second-generation children, rather than their parents. Abhi felt that it was the parents who had "a cooler story to tell, because they up and leave their country at the age of 40 or 50, and they move to a brand new place."
Devil May Cry
3
In an interview featured in the 149th issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, the game's director Hideki Kamiya confirmed that Dante's personality was inspired by Cobra from the manga series Space Adventure Cobra, and Joseph Joestar from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, while also saying that no movies in particular inspired the game. He stated:

"There are lots of different kinds of media that influenced this creation. As for the main character Dante, I was strongly influenced by a Japanese comic-book character named Cobra. Cobra is a character who has no fear and talks with lots of irony and provoking looks, even as he faces immense trouble. I always loved this character and his comic. I also referred to a character in another Japanese comic Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure [also a Capcom fighting game]. His name is Joseph Joestar and he's the main hero of the comic's second chapter. He has a very similar personality to Cobra. There are no specific movies that I referred to for DMC."
Kirby Super Star
3
Attachment In an interview conducted by Nintendo to promote the release of the Super NES Classic Edition, Kirby Super Star director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that celebrity copywriter and EarthBound series creator Shigesato Itoi came up with the game's Japanese title, Kirby of the Stars Super Deluxe. Itoi also came up with the idea for the Japanese box art, which is designed after Paulownia wood boxes traditionally used to package luxury alcohol and tableware in Japan. Itoi believed that both the title and the artwork would "convey how rich [the game] is in content."

In an interview with VGC for The GameCubes's 20th anniversary, veteran Rare developer Martin Hollis revealed that not only was he among the first people to see "Project Dolphin", but also that he was possibly responsible for the GameCube's name and theme:

“I arrived in Kyoto, went into the big building, and Mr. Miyamoto and his team straight away took me to this empty meeting room and sat me down in front of a television [...] They switched it on, and Miyamoto told me to press the A button on the controller. I pressed it and the purple rolling cubes appeared on screen with the boot up music that we now know so well, revealing the GameCube name. [...] As the on-screen reveal happened, Mr. Miyamoto stared at my face intensely! That was my initiation, which was maybe because I’d actually suggested the name ‘Cube’ during my time at NTD. Months earlier I did a sheet of paper at Nintendo of America with a whole load of suggestions for names and one of them was ‘Star Cube’ or something like that.”

Nintendo did indeed trademark "Starcube" lending more legitimacy to Hollis' suspicion.
Drawn to Life
subdirectory_arrow_right Drawn to Life (Collection)

Attachment According to series creator Jeremiah Slaczka in a 2022 interview, the Creator in the Drawn to Life series is meant to represent the Christian God, and Wilfre is meant to represent Satan. This was hinted at in the game years beforehand, as one of the Creator's quotes is clearly based on a quote from Genesis 1:3. The Book of Life is a book given to the Raposa civilization by the Creator, so it's comparable to the Christian Bible. Wilfre, the villain of Drawn to Life, was a power-hungry character who turned against the Creator and became evil. He attempts to destroy the Book of Life many times, and he leads others down evil paths. Also of note is that the main protagonists aside from the creation hero are named "Mari and Jowee", of "Mary and Joseph", and that the Hero is drawn in a crucifix pose.

Kamikuishiki-mura Monogatari
2
Upon its discovery by English-speaking audiences, Kamikuishiki-mura Monogatari was widely speculated to be a propaganda game by Aleph (formerly and more infamously known as Aum Shinrikyo), a Japanese apocalypse cult and terrorist organization most notorious for perpetrating the Tokyo subway sarin gas attack in 1995. The game sees the player control Aleph founder Shoko Asahara, who expands the cult's influence throughout the game before eventually carrying out the sarin attack. Successfully carrying out the attack results in the player winning the game, while repeated mismanagement of the cult triggers the apocalypse that Asahara prophesied. Various photographs, propaganda footage, and news coverage tied to Aleph is also featured throughout the game, most prominently on the title screen.

Despite these elements, the idea that the game was created to advertise Aleph was eventually disproven in a 2019 investigation by Vice. According to the article, the game was published shortly after the sarin attacks with the intent of mocking the cult instead of endorsing them. Developer HappySoft's advertising campaign emphasized their hatred of Aleph and highlighted the fact that players could sell Asahara's bodily fluids to "stupid believers." Additionally, the live-action footage featured in the game was picked specifically to demean the cult, as featured news coverage is negative in tone and shows Aleph spokespeople frantically trying to avoid reporters, while the propaganda footage consists of clips that were widely mocked in Japanese media following the sarin attacks. Vice attributed the misconceptions to a combination of language barriers and limited international knowledge about Aleph beyond the sarin attacks.

Garten of Banban
subdirectory_arrow_right Reincarnated (Game), Indigo Park (Game)

In 2023, after seeing online backlash towards Garten of Banban for its barebones quality and gameplay, YouTuber UniqueGeese (real name Mason Myers) decided to try recreating the game in a single week to see if game development could be that easy. He would go on to do so over his spring break, and showed the results of his work in a video titled "I Recreated Garten of Banban in One Week", which would go on to become his most popular video. He released the game as "Garten of Banban: Reincarnated", but would later change the name to simply "Reincarnated" per the request of Garten of Banban developers the Euphoric Brothers in order to avoid confusion regarding the original games. The popularity of Reincarnated inspired Myers to create his own unique horror game, resulting in the development of Indigo Park.
