The Steam version of the game replaces the original disc swap screen with a new graphic depicting the game's box art on a CD. Unusually, the render does not depict a generic CD, but rather depicts a disc made by PolyGram's CD manufacturing plant in North Carolina, as indicated by the silver disc hub and "MADE IN USA" stamp. The latter specifically dates the design to 1991-1992, when the plant slowly rebranded from Philips DuPont Optical to PolyGram Manufacturing and Distribution Centers.
The Japanese version of the game has a much more dynamic scoring system. While every defeated enemy yields one point in international releases, the Japanese release has enemies vary in points, including bosses.
When Rashid was unveiled as a playable character in Street Fighter V, his specific nationality was unknown, with players only knowing that he was Middle Eastern. However, in 2022 when the entire playable base game roster and first wave of DLC of Street Fighter 6 was leaked, it revealed a more specific country he was from, with Rashid confirmed as being Saudi Arabian.
The Mineshaft and High Score themes from the 2016 version of the game were remade for the 2021 release. While the Mineshaft theme is a near-identical conversion, the High Score theme is quite different.
During the development of the Nintendo Switch version, exclusive guest character Anton received a few scrapped sprites, including one with a closed mouth. A bottle of a red beverage and a red ball with eyebrows and a beard (presumably a reference to Antonball, Anton's debut appearance) were also planned to serve as Anton's life counter before being replaced with beets in the final release.
The board for Pac-Man contains a DIP switch titled "Alternate Ghost Names", which in the Japanese release contained early English names for the ghosts:
At Spaceworld 2000, after Shigeru Miyamoto showed off a tech demo for a GameCube controller prototype he revealed another variant of the Gamecube controller called the "Wavebird". This Wavebird prototype design looked like a missing link between the design of the Virtual Boy controller and the GameCube controller, having long and slender handles like the Virtual Boy but being much bulkier everywhere else like the GameCube controller. It did end up matching the final design of the default GameCube controller.
A spider enemy was originally set to appear if the player took too long in a level, but was cut since their mechanic would run contrary to the game's focus on enemy combos.
The spider, now named Gil, would appear in a 2023 remake of the 2016 version of Annalynn as an optional enemy.
Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside and Freddi Fish and the Case of the Missing Kelp Seeds were released on the Wii as Pajama Sam: Don’t Fear the Dark and Freddi Fish: Kelp Seed Mystery respectively, alongside Spy Fox: Dry Cereal, which kept its name. However, these ports ran off of the ScummVM emulator engine and did not use proper attribution, leading to all unsold copies of the games being removed from sale and destroyed, and mandatory donations being made to the Free Software Foundation.
In the 2012 PC re-release, using a Save Crystal in a specific screen of the Northern Cave will display the area name in the menu and save file as "Secret Cow Level". This is a reference to the Secret Cow Level in Diablo II.
After you find Cloud in the hospital after he falls in the Lifestream, he will mumble incoherent things when you speak to him. One of the things he mumbles is "zeno... gias..." This is a translation error and a reference to the game Xenogears. In the PC port of Final Fantasy VII, the spelling is corrected to "Xeno... gears".
Cloud also says "A billion mirror fragments.... small.... light..." which is a reference to the vocal song of Xenogears, Small Two of Pieces. One of the lines to the song is "Broken mirror, a million shades of light".
The gender identity of the party member Vivian is inconsistent between different language translations of the original game. In the Japanese version, Vivian identifies and presents as female, but is described by other characters in the game as actually being an effeminate-looking male, aligning with common media depictions of transgender or gender non-conforming characters at the time, but not explicitly referring to Vivian as such. A rough translation of the Japanese text for Vivian as a party member reads:
"カゲ三人組の一人だった オンナのコのようで ホントは オトコのコ" "One of the shadow group, Vivian appears to be a girl but is really a boy."
The French version directly carries this over and additionally describes Vivian as a boy pretending to be a girl, while the Spanish version describes Vivian as a boy who looks like a girl. However, according to former Nintendo of Europe translator Pol Roca, Vivian's Spanish name "Bibiana" was intended to be a reference to the Spanish transgender actress Bibiana Fernández, who starred in the 1977 film Cambio de Sexo (or Sex Change).
The English and German versions remove any references to being transgender or gender non-conforming, implicitly portraying Vivian as a cisgender woman with "a bit of an inferiority complex". Instead of being bullied over her biological sex, her sisters instead belittle her for her appearance.
The Italian version of the game on the other hand explicitly depicts Vivian as an openly proud transgender woman, with the localization reconfiguring her relationships with gender identity and her sisters by having Marilyn and Bedlam's bullying being rooted in jealousy, traits which are absent in the Japanese script:
Vivian: "We'll defeat that Mario guy! 'Cause we are 'The three shadow sisters'!" Marilyn: "How can you define us as 'The three shadow sisters'? You are a man! A MAN!" Vivian: "That’s true, you are two sisters… But I am a woman too now, and I'm proud to have turned into a woman!" Marilyn: "Hmph. And you surely think you are more beautiful than we are, huh? You deserve a punishment for that!"
The English release of the Nintendo Switch remake follows the Italian version of the original game in unambiguously describing Vivian as a transgender woman, most prominently featuring a line where Vivian states that "it took me a while to realize that I was [Marilyn and Beldam's] sister... not their brother." It's currently unknown if Vivian's portrayal in other translations of the remake has changed from the original release.

Taito, the creators of Bubble Bobble, announced in 1996 that they had actually lost the source code for the arcade version of Bubble Bobble. All of the various ports were reverse engineered from the arcade ROM and earlier computer and console conversions.

In the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 releases, Spoiler:Yuri's suicide is altered in order to comply with Sony's content guidelines. Specifically, Spoiler:her blood stains are changed from red to black, the animated blood splatters are replaced with static, the classroom background shifts to dark gray static, and the camera zooms in the first time she stabs herself. However, the following sequence, in which Spoiler:the player stays beside her corpse for several days, is unaltered.
Street Combat was originally released in Japan as Ranma ½: Chounai Gekitou Hen, a tie-in with the anime adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi's 1987 manga Ranma ½. The American release stripped out all references to the source material due to its obscurity in the United States at the time, though the in-game sprites for Street Combat's cast are visibly traced over their Ranma ½ counterparts. Additionally, Happosai and Cologne are merged into a single character, Happy, in Street Combat.
Race Ace is the only game in Don't Buy This to have been released as an individual cassette prior to the compilation's release, credited to Tony Rainbird, who helped create the Firebird label that Don't Buy This was published under, meaning its inclusion may have been an in-joke.
During the second phase of the final boss fight in the SNES release, Baby Bowser has three fingers on each hand, contrasting with most official portrayals of Bowser, which show him with four. This error is fixed in the Game Boy Advance version, which redraws his sprites to give him the proper number of fingers.
Ever since the first game in 2014, fans have debated about the color of Bonnie the Rabbit and Withered Bonnie, as they looked blue in some shots and purple in others. In some games, they were blue, others purple, and sometimes even one of them was blue and the other purple. The merchandise for the rabbits also strengthened the belief in him being purple, with very few pieces of merch being blue. 9 years later, the November 2023 issue of SFX magazine released with a segment about Blumhouse's "Five Nights at Freddy's" film with an interview with lead designer Robert Bennett about making the animatronics. When talking about Bonnie, he confirmed once and for all that he is blue, stating:
"Same as Chica, we had to figure out what the textures and the colors were. Bonnie's interesting, because in all of the media that I was looking at when I was researching it, he's purple. When I did the original designs, I made Bonnie purple. Well, I didn't realize that Bonnie is blue. It had something to do with the lighting in the first game. When you look at the plushies, and all the toys, Bonnie's usually purple. But Scott [Cawthon] was the one that was like, "No, he's blue." So that was a lot of back and forth to get that nailed down correctly."

According to a BBC News article from January 2003, Sony agreed to edit The Getaway after they received complaints from British Telecommunications (BT). BT was concerned about the misuse of a transit van bearing its logo and asked the developers to edit the game to remove BT's appearance entirely. The section of the game that BT objected to was the "Filthy Business" mission, where the main character Mark Hammond must attack and steal a BT van and then raid a police station to rescue another character. BT did not want attacks on its engineers to be portrayed in the game, and they were also worried that the game might incite real-life attacks on them. The section was removed from future releases of the game 12 days after its release, and all following versions of the game have a plain light-blueish van in the mission, with the dialogue also being altered to refer to it as just "a van" rather than a "BT van".
Originally, the game was passed with an MA 15+ rating on November 22, 2002. However, it was resubmitted and banned just five days later due to a cutscene showing the character Johnny Chai being tortured in detail. Another version of the game which censored version of this scene was released weeks later on December 13 with the identical rating.
These censorship changes are documented by the different releases of the game, starting with the 1.03 European version. This version included the Johnny Chai torture scene and the Ford Transit van with full BT livery and Ford badge in the cutscene model. After the game was initially banned in Australia, the developers altered the camera angles of the scene, focusing more on the characters' facial expressions rather than the violence. The cutscene model of the BT van was also re-textured, and the Ford badges were removed. This version is known as the 1.1 European version of the game, which was followed by the dispute from BT, resulting in their removal from future releases of the game.
In Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors, Huitzil has a fully-functional standing light kick which was never seen in any of the subsequent games. While the CPU never uses it, this attack can be performed by the player, although its slow startup and short range do not make it very useful. It can't be canceled into specials, nor does it have a rapid-fire capability. When Capcom Fighting Collection allowed Huitzil to be playable by conventional means, his animator Shisui said that this move was "so embarrassing that he wished it had never seen the light of day."
