Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
1
Attachment Upon the release of Rilla Roo as a DLC character in Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, the model of the character was heavily criticized for how far it strayed from his original model in Crash Bash, particularly the presence of a large beard and chin on his face, with many fans editing mockups of a more faithful Rilla Roo. In the game's final DLC update, a "fixed" version of Rilla Roo would be provided - however, rather than serving as a skin for, or replacing the original, Rilla Roo, this new Rilla Roo would be made a separate character titled "Fixed Rilla Roo", with his own animations and exotic skins. His victory podium animation has him stop to check his face, and then sigh in relief as a meta-joke.

Crazy Frog Racer
1
Attachment Despite the Game Boy Advance version of Crazy Frog Racer being rated for all ages, Rasta Dog's model has what appears to be a marijuana cigarette resting in his mouth, and is just barely visible in-game due to sprite compression.

Mighty Goose
1
With the viral success of Untitled Goose Game, Mighty Goose developer Richard Lems considered swapping out his goose protagonist for a duck, but ultimately decided that "there's room for another goose in gaming. Maybe it's just the start of a movement."
Pizza Tower
1
Attachment The Weenie and Burger Golfer enemies are based on Peter and Mac, the protagonists of an unmade Pizza Tower predecessor called Weenie Cop.
Super Mario 64
subdirectory_arrow_right The Legend of Zelda (Franchise)
1
According to Shigeru Miyamoto, the design of the Deku Baba enemies in The Legend of Zelda series were a cross between a dog and the giant snapping Clams from Super Mario 64.
Judgment
1
Attachment In the game files exists a beta version of protagonist Takayuki Yagami's design. This design was presumably an alternate plan in case the licensing agreement with Takura Kimura, the actor whose face inspired Yagami's design, runs out, or he gets involved in any kind of controversy.
Pooplers
1
Upon its initial release, Pooplers was, despite its young target audience, given an M rating by the ESRB for "blood", likely because one of the selectable poop colors in the game is red. Despite this M rating being featured in the game's trailer, the game would eventually be re-evaluated to an E10+ rating for merely "mild blood".

Disney's DuckTales
1
The reason Scrooge McDuck wears his red cloak from the Carl Barks comics (which would later be used in the 2017 DuckTales reboot) instead of the blue cloak from the original DuckTales TV series is because the blue cloak didn't stand out enough alongside blue and black level backgrounds.
Collection: WarioWare
1
Attachment Pyoro, the star of the game-within-a-game series that rivals Wario's microgames in the WarioWare series, is a parody of the Japanese malt chocolate ball brand Chocoball's mascot, Kyoro-Chan.
Mr. Gimmick
subdirectory_arrow_right Gimmick: Exact Mix (Game)
1
Attachment In Gimmick: Exact Mix, a black bird ally from the original game was recolored to resemble Kyorochan, the mascot of ChocoBall, a Japanese malt chocolate ball brand similar to Maltesers or Whoppers.
Crash Team Racing

Attachment On the character designer for Nitros Oxide in Crash Team Racing, Bob Rafei's website, he has a portfolio containing various works sorted by game. In the Crash Team Racing folder of the site, there is an image of a blue hippo in an aviator suit named "trippo.jpg". According to Rafei in 2017, this character was designed as a mascot for an airline search engine during the dot-com boom, but was placed in the CTR folder of the site by mistake. However, in the time between the image's discovery and the clarification, the image was spread online as if it was a lost Crash Bandicoot character, gaining the accepted name of "Fasty" through unknown means.

In Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled, the character Hasty the Moose, one of two completely original characters alongside King Chicken, was inspired by the myth of "Fasty", with a similar body build; face; outfit; and name in both meaning and spelling.
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
1
Attachment Early concept art (released by Hideo Yoshizawa) depicts Huepow as a flame monster eating an enemy alive and throwing out its lifeless corpse and the Moos as werewolf-like creatures. This art suggested that the game was originally going to be somewhat darker and more action-oriented than the final game turned out to be.
Mappy
subdirectory_arrow_right Mappy (Collection)
1
Attachment The characters of Mappy and Goro/Nyamco predate the Mappy game by 2 and 3 years respectively, originally being designed as robots for Micromouse maze competitions. Unlike the similar situation with Pac-Man banks, these robots were made by Namco, making Mappy fully verifiable as both an official and intentional adaptation.
Q*bert
subdirectory_arrow_right Q*bert: Rebooted (Game), Wreck-It Ralph (Franchise), Q*Bert (Collection)
1
Q*Bert co-creator Warren Davis, although highly grateful for the character's continued longevity, dislikes that modern portrayals of the character, such as those in Disney's Wreck-It Ralph, Adam Sandler's Pixels, and the Q*Bert: Rebooted game make his nose "flaccid".
Five Nights at Freddy's
1
Attachment In a 2018 interview with YouTuber Dawko, Scott Cawthon was asked how he came up with the original designs of the animatronics. Cawthon answered with:

"The main 3 characters Freddy, Bonnie, and Chica. Those designs just kind of [...] I didn't really plan ahead like what animals they should be. Those three just kind of seemed natural to me for some reason. You know, the only one I really struggled with was trying to think of the fourth character. [...] I'm trying to remember all the options that I'd originally was kind of debating between. I mean, one of the contenders was a fox obviously which ended up winning. The other one was a wolf, and the other one was going to be a beaver. But then later I decided against that, because I thought that was too on-the-nose from Chipper so I decided against that."
30XX
1
The character Delta was originally created by artist Glauber Kotaki back in 2002, for a personal project which never saw the light of day. Delta's first appearance in a game was the 2009 Mega Man fangame "22XX Grand Tournament".
