Although the Nintendo 64 is one of the most popular video game consoles of all time in North America selling over 20 million units in that continent, it did not achieve a similar level of commercial success outside of North America.

In Europe, the console sold 6.35 million units in Europe with only 6 games - all first party - cracking over a million copies sold (Banjo-Kazooie, Pokémon Stadium, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye 007, and Super Mario 64).

In Japan, the console sold 5.54 million units, just barely being outsold by the Sega Saturn (which had a similarly regionally-disproportionate install base in Japan) and only managed to push more than a million units of 11 titles, also entirely first party (Mario Party 3, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Mario Tennis, Mario Party 2, Donkey Kong 64, the game released in the US and Europe as Pokémon Stadium 2, the Japan-exclusive Pocket Monsters Stadium, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Super Smash Bros., and Mario Kart 64).

Of the various regional versions of the Chronicle sub-mode, the Japanese list is the closest to a complete list of games published by Nintendo up to December 2007.

However, various old webpages on Nintendo of Japan's website that similarly compile all Nintendo-published games for a particular console list some games that were not in the Chronicle:

• The Super Famicom page includes several games that were released exclusively through the Nintendo Power service (not to be confused with the North American magazine of the same name) and never received a standard physical release.
Additionally, all games in the Chronicle that were originally released for the Nintendo Power service would use their release dates for their standard physical release (e.g. Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 was first released via Nintendo Power on September 1, 1999, then released on cartridge on January 21, 2000; the Chronicle uses the latter release date for the game).

• The Game Boy page includes another Nintendo Power-exclusive, Balloon Fight GB, the Japanese Game Boy Color release of Balloon Kid.
Oddly, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, despite being a Nintendo Power-exclusive title in Japan, is still listed in the Japanese Chronicle.

• The Nintendo 64 page includes games by Rare not based on pre-existing properties (both Banjo-Kazooie games for the system, Blast Corps, Jet Force Gemini, and Perfect Dark), three Star Wars titles (Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, Star Wars: Episode I - Racer, and Star Wars: Rogue Squadron) and F-1 World Grand Prix.

• The Game Boy Advance page includes Oriental Blue: Ao no Tengai.
Additionally, while Nintendo has published every game in the Famicom Mini series (known as Classic NES Series in North America and NES Classics in Europe), only the ports of first-party titles were included in the Chronicle.
The 2005 re-release of Famicom Mini: Super Mario Bros. was also excluded from the Chronicle, likely due to that version simply being a re-release to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros.

• The GameCube page includes Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and Baten Kaitos Origins.

• The Nintendo DS list includes the Nintendo DS Digital TV Tuner peripheral.

• The Virtual Boy and pre-2008 Wii webpages have completely identical game lists to their Chronicle counterparts.

In 2020, hackers Gary Bowser and Max "MAXiMiLiEN" Louarn were arrested and extradited to the United States for money laundering and selling products meant to crack the Nintendo Switch's copy protection to run pirated copies of games. The two were members of Team Xecuter, a hacking group which specialized in similar measures for a large number of Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft consoles. In 2021, Bowser pled guilty on conspiracy and trafficking charges and was sentenced to 40 months in prison; Nintendo later filed a separate civil suit against him, which together with the prison sentence left him $14.5 million in debt. The company's legal department claimed during the court case that the unusually severe punishments were intended to send a chilling effect through the piracy world, intimidating would-be hackers by using Bowser's punishment as an example.

Following the case, multiple news outlets noted the irony of Gary Bowser's last name, which is shared with Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser and Mario series antagonist Bowser.

Franchise: Sonic The Hedgehog

During the reboot of Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comics, several characters and aspects adapted into the comic from the 1993 Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon (commonly referred to as "Sonic SatAM") were noticeably altered for a variety of factors:

• Ixis Naugus (referred to simply as Naugus in the show) was changed to "Walter Naugus". His species (which was never actually stated in the show, though the pre-reboot comics depicted him as a rhino-bat-lobster hybrid) was changed to that of a troll, with a tail being added to his design to help make him look as such, alongside his attire being updated to more resemble a warlock. Additionally, despite what was initially believed, the term "Ixis" was originally applied to Naugus' cartoon production materials, and was not invented by former writer Ken Penders. This meant it was still usable in the comics, and was later given to the deity worshipped by the troll species.
• Muttski was changed to "Ben "Mutt" Muttski", and was changed from a non-anthropomorphic dog to an anthropomorphic one. Notably, his new name was given in honor of Ben Hurst, the main writer of "Sonic SatAM" who sadly passed away in 2010.
• Snively Robotnik (referred to simply as Snively in the show) was changed to "Doctor Julian Snively", with his first name being a nod to "Sonic SatAM", as Dr. Robotnik's original name in the show was Julian. According to Ian Flynn, he is no longer related to Dr. Eggman in the reboot due to Sega's mandates not allowing other media to invent family members for the main "SegaSonic" cast. Ironically, while his half-sister Hope Kintobor was removed from the reboot, Snively inherited her position as G.U.N.'s R&D Specialist.
• Maximillian Acorn (referred to simply as "The King" in the show) was changed to "King Nigel Acorn". His name was most likely changed due to being coined by former writer Ken Penders. Notably, his new name, speech pattern and mannerisms are shared with Nigel Thornberry from the animated series "The Wild Thornberrys": Nigel was voiced by British actor Tim Curry, who also voiced the King in "Sonic SatAM".
• Nicole the Holo-Lynx's new backstory in the reboot has her being created by Dr. Ellidy in an attempt to digitize the consciousness of his dying daughter Nikki. This may have been loosely inspired by Ben Hurst's plans for the cancelled third season of "Sonic SatAM", where it would have been revealed that Nicole was originally a normal girl until she was tricked by Dr. Robotnik into having her entire personality transferred into a computer satellite.
• Although the Wolf Pack originated from "Sonic SatAM", the only member of the group who was not created by Ken Penders was their leader Lupe the Wolf, who also originated from the show. As such, when the comic was rebooted, she was the only member of the group to be carried over.
• Aside from King Acorn, the only parent of a "Sonic SatAM" character to make it into the reboot was Sabina, the mother of Dulcy the Dragon and herself a character from the show. However, while Ian Flynn did confirm that she was still Dulcy's mother in the reboot, she never actually appeared in the comic prior to its cancellation. Additionally, given that Dulcy refers to her with present tense, it's likely that Sabina is still alive in the reboot, whereas she had died in the original continuity.

Attachment The robot boss of Sector X, dubbed "Spyborg" in the English version of Star Fox 64, is known as HVC-09 in the Japanese version.

HVC (Home Video Computer) was the model number that was used for Famicom (the Japanese equivalent to the Nintendo Entertainment System) hardware and peripherals. For example, the model number for R.O.B. (who in Japan was called Family Computer Robot) was HVC-012. Likewise, the model number for the NES Zapper (known as the Famicom Light Gun in Japan) was HVC-005. The model number for the Famicom itself was HVC-001.

Funny enough, in real life, there never was any NES related hardware whose model number was HVC-09.

Despite being a boss character, Master Hand is considered worse than any regular character in competitive play when unlocked through the Name Entry glitch. This is due to his high power and unconventional win conditions being nullified by his lack of defense options, slow attack and non-existent movement speed, and - in the case of doubles - his inability to attack the member of the opposing team with a lower port number.

Due to Master Hand being an undesirable character to play as, he is rarely explicitly mentioned as being banned in Melee tournament rulesets. However, he will usually be banned at a TO's discretion in the rare occasion he pops up, due to his win conditions stretching matches out extremely long and his matches always ending with the game crashing.

Attachment A few of Banjo-Tooie's worlds were originally planned for its predecessor, Banjo-Kazooie, such as the fire side of Hailfire Peaks and Glitter Gulch Mine. Many of these were cut primarily because of time constraints.

Gobi mentions leaving for the "Lava World" in Click Clock Woods, which adds up as Gregg Mayles' concept art for the cut lava world shows that Gobi would have been present. Gobi would eventually live up to his promise by appearing in the fire side of Hailfire Peaks in Banjo-Tooie, after being freed in Witchyworld.

In 2020, after Nintendo sent a cease & desist to the major Super Smash Bros. tournament The Big House for using emulated Slippi netplay in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, participants in an official Splatoon 2 tournament collectively changed their tags to include the phrase "#FreeMelee". Shortly after, Nintendo would cancel the tournament, with their statement simply pertaining to "unexpected executional challenges".

In response to this, the Splatoon community hosted their own tournament in tribute to The Big House, titled "The Squid House" - this would end up becoming the biggest Splatoon series tournament to date, attracting 7,000 viewers and raising $28,000 USD, with $3,000 going to charity while the rest went to the participants.

During Summer Game Fest 2023, the game's creative director Brian Intihar revealed that the Venom featured in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 would not be based on the origin story of Eddie Brock. Instead, Intihar stated:

In 2022, Logan McPherson, the director of the animated series Sonic Prime, stated that the show is canon to the games, drawing upon their existing mythology. Ian Flynn would further support this claim, revealing that he knew when exactly in the series timeline the show took place in, but would not reveal it until after the show ends, while noting that something happens in the show to make it clear that it is indeed canon to the games. In 2024, after the release of Sonic Prime's third and final season, Ian Flynn finally confirmed the show's status in the overall Sonic timeline: aside from taking place sometime after the events of Sonic Advance 3, the show's placement is considered moot due to the ending Spoiler:having the show wipe itself out. In response to complaints regarding this outcome, Flynn claimed that its placement in the canon was intentionally vague, and the show being canon to the games at all was not his decision due to only being involved in the animated series as a consultant.

This makes Sonic Prime the first television series based on the Sonic franchise to be considered canon to the mainline series.
