There is a secret code in the Japanese version of the original game. Going into the menu screen and entering Down, Up, Right, Left, Select, Start, Select, Start, B, will cause Toad to appear on-screen and say:

"Secret code found!
Now, let's take a look at your Status.
......Wow!
Nothing's changed at all.
But, what about your experience points......
Nope, nothing's changed.
There's no point in looking for other codes,
and the result will always be the same.
I'll play with you as many times as you like, though......
Secret Code END"

This code would be included internationally for the first time in the game's 2023 remake.

Kirby's Star Stacker
subdirectory_arrow_right Kirby's Super Star Stacker (Game)
1
Attachment A remake of the game titled Kirby's Super Star Stacker was released for the Super Famicom in 1998 in Japan. It was intended for international release, but due to the end of the SNES's lifespan in North America and Europe, it wasn't localized. The game would eventually see a North American and European release through Nintendo Switch Online in 2023.

The NES demake of Pac-Man Championship Edition, featured in 2020's Namco Museum Archives Volume 1, was originally created as an unauthorized fan project by homebrew developer coke774 in 2008.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
2
The Game Gear version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has a reputation as one of the hardest installments in the Sonic franchise due to making minimal changes to already-challenging level layouts designed for the Master System's larger aspect ratio on the notoriously small Game Gear screen.

Because Sega prefers to release the Game Gear version of the game on newer hardware, and the original Master System version only being released in the Master System's most successful regions (Europe, Australia, and Brazil), most players are only familiar with the version generally considered inferior.

3D Pinball: Space Cadet
subdirectory_arrow_right PC (Microsoft Windows) (Platform)
1
At an unknown point after 3D Pinball: Space Cadet's removal from Windows hardware starting with Vista, there was an attempt within Microsoft Garage (Microsoft's program for experimental, non-profitable employee projects) to revive the game with compatibility for current Windows operating systems. While the port was finished, it could not be publicly released due to the 1994 contract with Cinematronics (now merged into THQ Nordic) stipulating that the game could not be released as an independent entity, only bundled with Windows hardware.
Microsoft Minesweeper
subdirectory_arrow_right Microsoft Minesweeper (Game), Microsoft Minesweeper (Game)
1
Attachment The "Flower Garden" mode of Minesweeper was created to be more sensitive towards users in countries, such as Italy, where landmines are a common cause of death rather than seen as a war movie trope. It was originally only available to Italian players, but became a customization option in 2007's remake of Minesweeper, with Flower Garden being the only option for Italian players. in 2012's Microsoft Minesweeper, the Flower Garden mode would also be the only aesthetic option on Siberian and Chinese players.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World
subdirectory_arrow_right Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX (Game)
1
In the Japanese version of Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Alex eats a rice ball at the end of each stage. The 1990 US revision of the game changes this to a hamburger.

In Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX, a Spanish omelette and fish & chips are added as options, possibly in tribute to the Master System's popularity in Spain and the United Kingdom.

Dottori-kun
subdirectory_arrow_right Head On (Game), Arcade (Platform)
3
Dottori-Kun, a 1991 demake of Sega's 1979 maze game Head-On, was created not to be played, but rather as a legal loophole around Japan's Electrical Appliance and Material Control Law which claimed that all arcade machines must contain a game when sold. Dottori-Kun allowed Sega to sell generic Astro City arcade machines which the arcade owner could swap the contents of at their leisure, and included test features to ensure the machine worked properly before installing a proper game. The game did not support coin insertion, and therefore was not a viable option for arcades even if an owner believed there was an audience for its simplistic gameplay and graphics, leading to the board being scrapped most of the time.
Cheese Terminator
subdirectory_arrow_right PC (Microsoft Windows) (Platform)
2
Attachment Cheese Terminator was a game given away for users who answered a survey included in the box with Microsoft Windows 3.1 in Eastern European countries. When a player decided to send the survey in in 2016 out of curiousity, they received a floppy disc and USB floppy drive containing the original game, packaged in a box advertising a limited-time free remake, Cheese Terminator: Reloaded, that would be released soon after.

Attachment In Star Fox 64 3D's ending, the conference hall where the Star Fox team meets General Pepper after Andross' defeat was changed from its original appearance into a hangar, with fewer, more spread out Dog soldiers.

More notable, however, is how the generic planet Corneria image and lettering at the back of the room has been replaced by the Cornerian Army logo that first appeared in Star Fox: Assault.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
subdirectory_arrow_right Super Mario RPG (Game)
1
Various pop culture references that were made in the original English release of Super Mario RPG were removed in the remake:

• Mallow no longer mentions Bruce Lee prior to him and Mario going to fight Bowyer.
• Punchinello no longer references James Bond or the Thing during his boss fight.
• Mini Goomba's Thought Peek no longer references Theodore Roosevelt's aphorism "Speak softly and carry a big stick. You will go far."
• Stinger's Thought Peek no longer references the 1990 Madonna song "Vogue".
• The password clues on the Sunken Ship are no longer written by famous explorers.

Some of these references, such as the Bruce Lee reference, may be due to licensing issues.

Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration
subdirectory_arrow_right SwordQuest: AirWorld (Game), Swordquest: Earthworld (Game), Swordquest: Fireworld (Game), Swordquest: Waterworld (Game), Swordquest (Collection)
1
Attachment The SwordQuest series was a series of 4 games developed by Atari, each one having an associated contest to win a one-of-a-kind item from the game made of real gold by finding clues in the game and using them to uncover hidden messages in the attached comic book, then coming to Atari headquarters to compete in a contest version of the respective game. The advertised prizes were:

•Talisman of Penultimate Truth, Earthworld's prize
•Chalice of Light, Fireworld's prize
•Crown of Life, Waterworld's prize
•The Philosopher's Stone, Airworld's prize
•The Sword of Ultimate Sorcery, the grand prize

Halfway through the series, the video game crash of 1983 hit, and it was put to a halt, leaving Airworld, the Philosopher's Stone, and the Sword of Ultimate Sorcery unreleased. The Chalice of Light is the only item known to still exist, with all others being believed to have been melted down at some point.

In Atari 50, a game based on Airworld would see release, though it was not based on the work done for the game back in the 1980s.
Super Mario RPG
1
Attachment High Boo's Thought Peek quote, "*sigh* ♪Stomp, stomp, clap. Stomp, stomp, clap.♪", references the 1977 song "We Will Rock You" by English glam rock band Queen. The song famously features a percussion section consisting of two stomped eighth notes followed by a clapped quarter note. Uniquely, this reference is a new addition to the remake; in the original SNES version, High Boo (known there as Li'l Boo) says "Beep pa doodle-dee!♪"

The Great Giana Sisters
2
Attachment Chiptune composer Martin Galway developed an unofficial port of The Great Giana Sisters for the Nintendo DS and released it online on February 20th, 2007 to mark the 20th anniversary of the series. The port came out two years prior the official release of Giana Sisters DS.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land
subdirectory_arrow_right Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe (Game)
3
Attachment Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe redesigns Wing Kirby's costume, changing the pattern on the headband to a series of straight lines, adding a red jewel on the front (similar to the kind seen on other Copy Ability hats), and replacing the rows of feathers on the back with arrangements that more closely resemble a bird's wings. As the original design was based on a Native American warbonnet, the redesign was likely to avoid cultural appropriation, as real-life warbonnets are regarded as sacred in tribal cultures and consequently can only be worn by those who have earned the right to do so.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
subdirectory_arrow_right Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Game)
1
Both the original GameCube release and the Nintendo Switch remake are rated E by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), but the GameCube version's rating was simply given the descriptor "Mild Cartoon Violence". The remake’s ESRB rating was updated to replace it with the descriptors "Mild Fantasy Violence" and "Mild Suggestive Themes". These "Mild Suggestive Themes" most likely refer to flirtatious dialogue (i.e. "Aren’t you a fine specimen of a man"; "Perhaps if I…grabbed you and gave you a little sugar") and a character with a large chest/exaggerated proportions, referencing Madame Flurrie.
