The Eternal Darkness project originally started off to be built as a game for the Nintendo 64 and was first announced at the 1999 E3 convention. However, as changes went on in development and with the GameCube coming out, the game ended up being touched up and released for the GameCube in 2002.

A Templar Knight character named Joseph De Molay was cut in the final version of the game. He was shown in various demonstration builds of the game and was even playable for in a demo of the game that appeared at E3 2001.
His role in the final game may have been relegated to a minor character only named as the "Defeated General" in the game's end credits. Pious makes a comment that he was able to see through his disguise, hinting that he may have been one of the chosen.
