Bionis and Mechonis seem to represent the Taoist idea of Yin and Yang. Yin is masculine and usually presented as white, and Yang is feminine and usually presented as black. Bionis is white and ruled by Zanza (a male) and Mechonis and is black and ruled by Meyneth (a female). Additionally, Mechonis and Bionis are equal in strength and become locked in combat, thus unable to defeat one another. This may parallel the idea that though Yin and Yang are different, they complement one another and, therefore, one cannot live without the other.

Attachment There is a special encounter in which you can encounter a shuttle-craft (USS Torres) that has crashed onto the Earth with three red-shirted men around the craft, all dead from dehydration. On their bodies are "Hypos", which can be used and serve as Super Stimpacks but without the HP-loss side effect.

This is an obvious reference to the Sci-Fi series Star Trek, including the popular trope of "Dead Red Shirts" from the oriignal series in which almost any non-essential character in the show wearing a Red Shirt in an episode was certain to be dead not soon afterwards.

The "USS Torres" may be a reference to one or more people, such as B'Elanna Torres who was a Klingon-Human character from Star Trek : Voyager in 1995-2001, another "Torres" in the first episode of Star Trek : The Next Generation, and finally "Adoni Torres" who worked on Fallout 2 as an Intern Artist.

This game was plagued by internal conflict within the development team. Hiroki Kikuta wanted to take the RPG genre into a new direction while the others wanted to do something more close to what Squaresoft (now Square Enix) was doing at the time. Kikuta wanted the game to be action orientated, citing Resident Evil as inspiration.
Kikuta departed Sacnoth after the game was released and Sacnoth changed their name to Nautilus. This game is considered the source material for the series Shadow Hearts, as the games take place in the Koudelka universe.
