Mario Bros.
subdirectory_arrow_right Mario Bros. Classic Serie (Game)
2
In 1993, an enhanced version of the NES Mario Bros. was released exclusively in Italy and Germany, under the "Classic Serie" label, which reimplements the enemy introduction cutscenes and icicle hazard from the arcade version, and allows Mario to turn in the middle of jumping.
Pro Wrestling
1
Attachment There exists a revised version of Pro Wrestling that changes the iconic "A WINNER IS YOU" typo to simply "WINNER IS YOU".
Mario's Super Picross
1
Attachment The Virtual Console versions of Mario's Super Picross replace three puzzles, likely due to legal issues:

• The likeness of Marilyn Monroe, which was replaced by a tortoise.
• A set of Tetrominos from Tetris, which was replaced by a hermit crab.
• The painting The Scream by Edvard Munch, which was replaced by a chameleon.

Despite The Scream and Monroe's likeness entering the public domain in 2015 and 2012 respectively, the Wii U; New 3DS; and Switch versions of the game keep the replaced puzzles.

Um Jammer Lammy
1
Attachment The cutscene for the final stage in Um Jammer Lammy has Lammy, Ma-San, and Katy Kat all rush to the same door and apologize for being late as they got in a "lot of mess", implying that Katy and Ma-San had similar adventures to Lammy. In the American version of the game, Lammy gets to the door in her camouflage outfit from the censored island stage, and to adjust for this, Ma-San gains a Middle Eastern turban and camel, while Katy gains a military helmet and bullet strap, giving a further clue as to what adventures they could've gone on.

Tapper
1
Attachment There exists 3 versions of Tapper

•The original version with Budweiser branding
•The censored "Root Beer Tapper" version, which swaps beer for root beer and changes Tapper from a bartender to a soda jerk
•The Japanese release that replaces Budweiser with Japanese alcohol brand Suntory

The Suntory version of the game also carries over minor graphical improvements from the Root Beer version of the game.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
subdirectory_arrow_right Super Mario RPG (Game)
1
Various pop culture references that were made in the original English release of Super Mario RPG were removed in the remake:

• Mallow no longer mentions Bruce Lee prior to him and Mario going to fight Bowyer.
• Punchinello no longer references James Bond or the Thing during his boss fight.
• Mini Goomba's Thought Peek no longer references Theodore Roosevelt's aphorism "Speak softly and carry a big stick. You will go far."
• Stinger's Thought Peek no longer references the 1990 Madonna song "Vogue".
• The password clues on the Sunken Ship are no longer written by famous explorers.

Some of these references, such as the Bruce Lee reference, may be due to licensing issues.

Alphabet Park Adventure
1
Attachment When the Mark 2 V.Smile was released, the pack-in game Alphabet Park Adventure got a revised iteration that, among other changes, replaced every single sprite of the two player characters to make them appear more realistic, albeit still cartoonish.
PaRappa the Rapper
1
One particularly infamous lyric in PaRappa the Rapper is in Prince Fleaswallow's rap, where he claims to have "been working here since [his] mama was a baby". While it is simply an exaggerated simile and not an actual piece of world lore, it has still been the source of mild chuckles from players for its unintentionally disturbing undertones if taken literally.

When music from PaRappa the Rapper was played by an orchestra at Sony's 23rd Game Symphony Japan concert in 2018, the lyric would be revised from "Since my mama was a baby" to "Since your mama was a baby", a more fitting lyric as PaRappa is supposed to be a young adult and Fleaswallow is presumably significantly older.

Duck Hunt
subdirectory_arrow_right Baseball (Game), Hogan's Alley (Game), Ice Climber (Game), Wrecking Crew (Game), 10-Yard Fight (Game), Pinball (Game), Tennis (Game), Golf (Game), Gyromite (Game), Stack-up (Game), Kung Fu (Game), Excitebike (Game), Clu Clu Land (Game), Wild Gunman (Game), Family Computer (Platform), Nintendo Entertainment System (Platform)
2
Multiple early "black box" NES releases' cartridges produced during the console's US launch in Winter 1985 didn't use NES ROM chips, but rather Famicom ROM chips with a built-in converter. The 15 NES launch titles, and the only games known to have these chips, are:

10-Yard Fight
Baseball
Clu Clu Land
Duck Hunt
Excitebike
Golf
Gyromite
Hogan's Alley
Ice Climber
Kung Fu
Pinball
Stack-Up
Tennis
Wild Gunman
Wrecking Crew

All of these games would eventually be reprinted with regular NES chips.
Ms. Pac-Man
subdirectory_arrow_right Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Game), Pac-Man Museum+ (Game), Pac-Man World Re-Pac (Game), Pac 'n Roll (Game), Pac-Land (Game), Pac-Man (Franchise), AtGames (Company), General Computer Corporation (GCC) (Company), Ms. Pac-Man (Collection)
1
Attachment In 2019, AtGames, a company specializing in replica microconsoles containing compilations of retro or retro-styled games, acquired a portion of the rights to Ms. Pac-Man from General Computer Corporation, the company that made the original Ms. Pac-Man game for Midway and Namco - this led to a lawsuit over the IP, with an undisclosed turnout. After this, Ms. Pac-Man would begin to disappear from Pac-Man games, implying that AtGames won the case, with Ms. Pac being replaced by a character named Pac-Mom, who has a visual design resembling Ms. Pac-Man's mother from Pac 'N Roll.

Pac-Mom first appeared in the Arcade Archives release of Pac-Land through graphical modification to the original ROM, and would then be named for the first time in Pac-Man Museum+ alongside modifications to other games that originally featured Ms. Pac-Man such as Pac-in-Time, and would appear again in Pac-Man World: Re-Pac in place of Ms. Pac-Man.

Ms. Pac-Man's final appearance in an original title would be on the Pac-Land stage in 2018's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Frogger
1
The music in Frogger is taken from a variety of sources, some public domain (such as the Japanese nursery rhyme "Dog Policeman" and the minstrel song "Camptown Races") while others are stolen copyrighted music from anime (the Japanese theme songs to Rascall the Raccoon and Heidi, Girl of the Alps).

Re-releases of Frogger tend to replace all of the music in the game, including certain public domain songs, with original tracks (though "Camptown Races" tends to remain intact).

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
1
Attachment Due to the limited amount of space on the Sega Game Gear screen, the title screen for Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on that platform is spelled as Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machin.

The Mysterious Murasame Castle
2
Attachment In the original game, the screen flashes black, red, and white when the thunder strikes the title screen. The Virtual Console release changes this to a single slower pink flash, as part of the Nintendo re-release tradition of lessening the chance of causing epileptic seizures.
Yoshi
2
Attachment The Game Boy version of Yoshi has an unused Bullet Bill piece. It is not present in the NES version.
Atari Video Cube

Suikoden II
1
Attachment According to Raww Le Klueze, global admin of the Suikosource forums, there are three unused sprites found in the PC version that appear to be part of an unused Blue Gate summon or something similar. The three sprites are supposed to appear in different spots on the screen which would explain why they are looking in different directions.

To support that idea, in the Gensou Suikoden II 108 Stars Character Guide (published only in Japan by Konami), within a section detailing a scrapped idea to summon spirits of other elements, there are a few characters resembling the three unused sprites if they were mixed together.

Um Jammer Lammy
subdirectory_arrow_right Um Jammer Lammy Now (Game)
1
Attachment In the original Japanese and European versions, Paul Chuck's song had a line about "chopping trees down for fun". In the US, this was changed to "Knowing that we're here for the fun" in Lammy's song, and changed two times due to being repeated in PaRappa's version: "Rockin' to the beat just for fun" and "Rollin' up high in the sun". The censored version is used in Um Jammer Lammy NOW.
