Dragon Ball Z: V.R.V.S.
1
Attachment A port of the game for the 3DO was planned and would've been called "Dragon Ball Z: Cell To Kogeki Da" with the final boss, Ozotto (an original character who had not appeared in any previous manga or anime), replaced with Cell. The port was playable at a convention in Japan in 1994, however it was never released. A promotional phone card was however given out.

For The Legend of Zelda's 25th anniversary, Nintendo of America wanted to do a compilation release featuring various classic titles from the series, however series creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata were against the idea. This was because they already released the Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary Edition a year prior and didn't want to do something similar twice in a row.

The GameCube is actually capable of rendering stereoscopic 3D. The GameCube was going to have an add-on that would attach to a TV and enable it to properly display 3D games. The first planned game for the add-on was Luigi's Mansion. The add-on was eventually cancelled as it would have cost more than the console itself.
Franchise: Spyro the Dragon
1
Attachment At one stage, an educational Spyro game was planned known as Spyro: Ever After. It would have been based on fairy tales, but was cancelled before any work had begun.
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
1
In 2005, rumors spread of a new side-scrolling Metroid game known as "Metroid Dread". The original version of this game never materialized, although it would be developed and released for the Nintendo Switch in 2021.

However, in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, scanning a computer screen in game reveals the message "Experiment status report update: Metroid project 'Dread' is nearing the final stages of completion.", most likely a nod to Metroid Dread.
Franchise: Jak and Daxter
1
A reboot Jak and Daxter game was in the works for the PS3 back in 2009. However, the team that would have created the game said that it would have ended up being a disservice to all the fans, since nothing that they were creating "felt like Jak and Daxter." After telling their superiors that it really wouldn't work, they were allowed to work on a new project, which turned into The Last of Us.
Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction
1
The game was never released in South Korea due to the country's fear of it straining the already tense situation between North and South Korea. This was due to the game's depiction of a war between the two countries.

1

Fur Fighters

Attachment On the 27th page of the manual for the PC and Dreamcast versions, an unreleased sequel only referred to as Fur Fighters II is mentioned. In the PS2 release, the mention is dropped from the manual.
Battletoads
subdirectory_arrow_right Battletoads (Franchise)
1
Attachment A Battletoads game for the Game Boy Advance was in development, but eventually canceled. A prototype version was created in a few weeks with placeholder character animations, enemy AI and sound effects. The game's design plans were to either make a remake of the original NES game or whatever the developers thought was best. A potential Xbox version was also in consideration.
Mario & Wario
1
Attachment Although Mario & Wario was released only in Japan, the game is entirely in English; a US release was planned, complete with box art, yet never materialized.

Of note is that the scrapped English box art features a logo identical to the one seen on the title screen, and that the game itself contains unused graphics for a Japanese version of the title screen with a logo identical to that seen on the Japanese box art. Combining this with the fact that Nintendo games' title logos rarely deviate from the box art (and vice-versa), this implies that the final game is actually based on an English prototype which was shipped to Japanese retailers by mistake.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
1
Attachment A PSP version was planned for release around April 2007. According to Official PlayStation Magazine, it lacked the free-roaming game-play the games usually had, and felt more like a "dungeon romp."
Night Trap
1
Footage of the never released VHS-based NEMO can be viewed in the Mega-CD version of Night Trap by entering a button code when the credits read "In Memory of Stephen D. Hassenfield". This footage shows Hasbro executives taking a look at Scene of the Crime (the prototype for Night Trap) in December 1987.

A PlayStation 2 version of the game was planned to be released around the same time as the GameCube version. However, the PlayStation 2 port was dropped in order to focus on the GameCube version.
New Ghostbusters II
1
New Ghostbusters II was only released in Europe. There were plans to make it available in America, but Activision had the rights to make a Ghostbusters video game in the USA, so it was never released outside of Europe.

A prototype of the American version of New Ghostbusters II was eventually leaked online as a ROM and can be played via emulation.
Fallout 3
subdirectory_arrow_right Van Buren (Game)
1
Attachment Fallout 3 was originally being developed around the early 2000s by developer Black Isle Studios under the codename Van Buren. The game was an RPG similar to the previous installments played from a top-down view and would've used the engine from the canceled "Baldur's Gate III: The Black Hound". The game would've been set in the southwest of America and the story focused around a prisoner who escapes from prison and trys to discover why he was there in the first place and to stop a scientist named Presper from unleashing a virus to cleanse the world of non-pure blood humans. The project was canceled after Interplay had laid off the development team, however a tech demo was later leaked onto the internet.
Franchise: Sam & Max
1
There have been two canceled games in the series. The first was an action game called Sam & Max Plunge Through Space. The game was being made for the Xbox, but was canceled before much about the game was revealed. The second game, simply known as Sam & Max: Freelance Police, made it fair into production (to the point it was even rated by the ESRB) before being canceled due to "current market place realities and underlying economic considerations." When Freelance Police was canceled, many of the employees left LucasArts to form Telltale Games so they could make episodic games.
Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection
1
Kojima said "I'm sorry to say an Xbox 360 version isn't being released, because an Xbox 360 version of MGS4 hasn't gone on sale," Kojima pointed out. "To explain the situation, the amount of data in MGS4 is just too enormous." He also mentions it would take up several disks to port MGS4. Kojima also pointed out that he wouldn't consider releasing the Legacy bundle without MGS4 because, in his words, "If we released a version on the Xbox 360 without MGS4, then it's not The Legacy Collection."
