Because the game is themed around musical-style theater, three types of songs were originally considered for the game's opening number. The first was based on the concept of the "I Want Song", a type of song in musical theater involving the characters singing about the key motivating desire that will propel everyone (including the audience) through the remainder of the show. The second song involved the characters singing what they would do if they were in the same place together. The third type of song that was actually used in the game involves the characters singing about the game in a narrative-style chorus.

For example, Mike Haggar from the Final Fight series was going to appear on Karin's stage via an elevator that would automatically go up and down, but was cut for being "too random". Leone Abacchio made it up to testing, but they had problems getting Moody Blues to work with the game. Since Abacchio can't really fight in a straightforward way, the developers had to come up with a system where he would replay things that had happened in the stage and thus rely completely on his opponent's power to battle.
